Welcome back to the era of the space shooter!

space-bannerSM.pngAh, the early nineteen-nineties. Back in the days when my primary game system was a Sega Genesis, my favorite games to play were usually space shooters. Like the point-and-click adventure, the genre is all but dead at this point, having run nearly dry of innovative new ideas outside of recent cult hits like Ikaruga and perhaps even Geometry Wars. But the real classic space shooter is a forced-scrolling bullet-fest, where the only way you survive is memorization, repetition, patience, and quick reflexes.

Fortunately for the three of us who still buy these games, shooters are set for a resurgence as they roll out on the Wii Virtual Console. As Levar Burton would say, “but you don’t have to take my word for it.”

So far, we’ve got five of them. Gradius, Space Harrier II, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade and R-Type. Expected upcoming titles include Galaga, and one of my personal favorites of the Genesis era, Bio-Hazard Battle, which Sega recently announced would be coming this month.

Now, perhaps Galaga and Space Harrier II shouldn’t be on this list because they don’t scroll quite the same way, but here’s the way I see it: if you fly and you shoot stuff and especially if you’re in space, that’s good enough for me.

So I’ve made it completely clear, nostalgia is in full effect here. Mention of Bio-Hazard Battle makes me think of the other games I played at the same time, like Insector-X and Herzog Zwei. Anybody else remember loving these games?
