Steam getting Guest Passes

steam_logo_rounded.jpgBack in November guest passes for Steam were announced. The idea was to allow Steam game owners to issue one-time, limited-time passes to friends who would be able to download the game via Steam and play it. It’s an inspired marketing idea, allowing players to show their friends all the great gameplay — online and off — of a steam title to try and hook them into buying the game.

This week an update for Steam will bring the guest passes online, along with other enhancements. The first game to permit guest passes will be Day of Defeat: Source.

I have to say I find the lack of updated demos for almost every game a big problem with game demos in general. They create a demo, which might be buggy, finish the game, then never go back to the demo or cut a new one from the final game code to better market the game. Steam guest passes will let gamers try out the real thing, offline or online, for a limited time.
