Second Spin: Kirby Canvas Curse

second-spin.pngSo what happens when you run out of new games for the Nintendo DS and you can’t really afford any more for a little while?

Why, the second spin happens, that’s what!

On the DS, we’ve got lots of great games to play, and while not all of them end (Animal Crossing), most do. Some games have additional play modes like Castlevania, some have stuff you can collect. Which brings us where you never expected: Kirby Canvas Curse.

I picked up Canvas Curse early on and rather enjoyed it. I even got a crappy free pink stylus that was identical to the stock stylus on the DS Mk I, except… pink. If you were an early adopter on the DS like me, you know what I’m talking about when I say that playing the games on the Lite, if they’ve been sitting on the shelf for a year or so, is shocking. In some games the colors can look a little bit washed out, more of a pastel when they should be vivid, and to some extent you get that on Canvas Curse’s second spin, but it still looks great.

Medal collecting is the name of the game. You’ve got eight or so worlds, each with three or so stages, each of those with three medals that are scattered around. Some of them you need to hit switches in other worlds to access, so there’s an amount of backtracking, and perhaps if you’re impatient, some gamefaqs.com visits.

All in all, it’s fun to play the game some more. Some of the medals are a little tough to get at so far, but a lot of them I got on the first trip through without trying. I found myself surprised at how slow-moving the game is, but I need to keep in mind that the other game I’m giving a second spin right now is Sonic Rush, and that still rocks hard, you know it.

What games on the DS are you giving a second spin?

I was gonna give Trauma Center another run-through, but I’m enjoying it rather thoroughly on my Wii. So I figured I’d go back and play both modes on Resident Evil. But with a brand new 360 with Gears and Oblivion and a brand new Wii with 12 games and six VC games, I just don’t have the time. But Elite Beat Agents for DS is taking most of my handheld time anyway.
