Rumor: 3rd party cables void PS3 warranty

Someone from the AVS forums claims that Sony told him his warranty has been voided because he used third party component cables instead of licensed Sony cables. This is troubling since Sony has said you can use any hard drive, for example, to upgrade your PS3… well that’s going to void your warranty too!

Here’s a paragraph from the PS3 warranty:

“(2) THE PRODUCT IS USED WITH PRODUCTS NOT SOLD OR LICENSED BY SCEA (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NON-LICENSED GAME ENHANCEMENT DEVICES, CONTROLLERS, ADAPTORS AND POWER SUPPLY DEVICES). YOU ASSUME ALL RISKS AND LIABILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS.”

If this extends to cables, should it be assumed that using third party controllers would void the warranty too? Yikes.

While working in a small independent video game store for a number of years, I have heard and seen this many times.

With the PS2, Sony tech help on numerous occasions tried to tell me the reason MY customers PS2 won’t read disc’s is because of the 3rd party RF or AV cables plugged into the back, and that the warranty is now void and I should have bought the $40 Sony brand RF, or the $80 Sony Component.

Clearly, any way to get out of a warranty issue and blame it on the 3rd party accessory manufacturer, whom by the way they license to make these products.

Something doesn’t feel right here. That sounds like it wouldn’t hold up in court. If this is true they are trying to monopolize on their parts. It is completely impossible for an output cable to cause problems in your system. A controller only communicates on and off, that can’t possibly cause a problem. The video cable only creates a video output and has no possible effect on your system.

Also how would they know you used a third party item unless you told them. It’s not possible for a third party item to cause a problem like that.

Is it the same with memory cards? Do they have the same for memory cards in their cameras? I just can’t ever believe this would hold in court. That’s no different than Microsoft saying the only word processing program you can use is Word else your warranty is void.
