Once Again, It Looks Like Wii Have to Wait.

Wii_reggie.jpgThe Wii consoles might be sailing off of store shelves, but the software is barely there. That image above is the most updated “confirmed software list” from Gamestop/EB games. Twenty, that’s twenty games that are currently scheduled for release in 2007.

Now I never thought that the Wii had piles of games coming out for it and more games are appearing on the horizon every day, however this list is staggering when put next to the PS3, 360 and PSP’s list. Sure, it’s all about quality over quantity, but can third party truly deliver better quality on the Wii that won’t be better when ported elsewhere?

Back in December, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told Newsweek that there won’t be a game drought. You might be thinking, “So what? The PS3 doesn’t have that many titles rolling out either.” Well, you’d be wrong. The current confirmed software list for the PS3 more than doubles that of the Wii.

Wii_vs_PS3_thumb.jpgIt’s pretty staggering when you observe the Wii’s release list next to it’s competitors and I could go on and on about it. I could match it up to the PS3 and 360, removing all the ports across the three platforms to truly reveal the barren wasteland that is Nintendo’s release list. I won’t stoop that low, because this isn’t a rant about the PS3 sitting pretty in the console race, I’m not that stupid. This is my plea for Nintendo to open the damn flood gates.

Unique, imaginative titles are everywhere and normally come from places other than Nintendo’s studios. Stephen mentioned in the past that Nintendo should make fewer games and I partially agree. Keep the great stuff but enough of this Nintendo-themed regurgitated trash. They need to open up their arms and support some Nintendo-uncensored third party content.

And drop those archaic friend codes already, whenever the hell you plan on instating online play.

The problem with Nintendo (among many) is that they will never confirm a date for a game until about a month out. According to this list, there will be no metroid, mario, or smash bros. this year? Hu?

There are more games, they just don’t have confirmed dates to end up on this list.

Sure, what you’re saying it true. The line up is still a bit thin, but it’s not quite as thin as this list makes it appear.

I agree with Subnet6. These stores do not list games on their release list until they know the number of copies of the game they will have in stock. As an example, they refused to take my preorder for Twilight Princess for Wii and it was less than two months before the announced release date.

That said, I don’t expect third party releases in particular to pick up on the Wii until late 2007. I don’t think anyone but Ubisoft and Sega were banking on such a successful Wii launch.

This is the problem that plagues every Nintendo console since the N64. Sure you can say quality over quantity but thats the kind of philosophy that put N64 on the back burner and did even less for the Gamecube. Its your typical Nintendo console, tons of first party mario whoring. Lame third party support. None of the cool third party multiplats are going to hit the Wii. Once games like Assassins Creed, Lair, GTA IV, Heavenly Sword, Crackdown, Bioshock, hit the scene the Wii is just going to look less and less appealing to gamers. DS Ports, PS2 Ports and Gamecube ports just aren’t going to cut it and I have yet to see ONE game that the wiimote completely saves all by itself. It seems that a lame game with wiimote controls is still lame or that a great game can be made without it (Super Smash Brothers Brawl.) Wii sales could see a nose dive if this keeps up.

An interesting post, but you fail to bring up the fact that developing a game for the Wii, from scratch, is a lot more difficult as a developer needs to design a game for a whole new type on controller. Sony, meanwhile, hasn’t really changed their controller since the PS1, so development time for sequels and games is faster. Not to mention, the only real difference between the PS3 and PS2 is processor power and better graphics. Spend a couple of month doing new textures, and you’ve update a PS2 game to a PS3 game.

Not to say Nintendo doesn’t have it’s problems, but the Wii is aimed at a completely different demographic than the PS3. If all I do is play multiplayer FPS games, then I’ll get a PS3. If a like games where the multiplayer actually involves people in the same room, and the point of gaming is to have fun, and gameplay is more important than graphics, then I’ll pick a Wii. Late 2007/early 2008 will, I’m sure, see a lot more original Wii titles, with better graphic detail than the current crop (witness Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube as an example).

I agree, date confirmation is a big problem. There is a good list of games coming out “sometime in 2007″. The list is short, sure, but that’s expected for the first year. We will see a much bigger look of where Wii is going on the games come summer around E3 time. I just hope many developers aren’t completely relying on 360 for their money. Wii is well worth developing so I hope they all take the time to try.
