Nintendo Will Get Right On That Original Downloads Thing

Submitted by on January 29, 2007 – 8:03 am2 Comments

wiishopchannel_rounded.pngNintendo has confirmed that they’ll be offering original games via their download service via a separate channel with no details at all or timeframe for doing it. I imagine they did their best to suppress a giggle when asked about that and said “Yeah, that indie developer, original content thing, we’ll get right on that.” They just might get to it after they’re done re-releasing every last Nintendo game on the Virtual Console sometime in 2024.

Really, does Nintendo have any interest in helping out anyone but themselves in their own online store? Of course not. Why give up valuable retail Channel space when you can keep doling out your own games one at a time, slowly but surely, so as to slowly bleed your die-hard fans dry drip by drip by drip so they don’t notice how much they’ve spent until it’s too late?

Slashdot mentions the story.

Gee, I dunno, because maybe they make a profit on every download? Hosting a developers $5 mini game cost Nintendo next to nothing. So, every $1 they charge to host the game or whatever other fees they have in mind equal pure profit. Just a hunch.

Yeah, we don’t even know how they will make original game available for download. That’s not all however: Nintendo has also said that soon there will be all kinds of new channels to download, including non-game-related ones, but we know nothing about those either.
