Make with the USB Game Boy Player adapter, already.

usb-plug.pngOne of the things I was the most concerned about regarding the Wii’s Gamecube reverse-compatibility was Nintendo’s assertion that all the Gamecube’s accessories would be fully compatible with Wii. I immediately cried foul, because of course, unless they made it look exactly like a GameCube along the bottom, how could it be compatible with the Game Boy Player?

Well, the Wii has USB ports, and they’ve got a USB LAN adapter pending, mentioned (but not linkable) in Nintendo’s online store. So this tells me they could do something very nice for all of us who picked up a Game Boy Player: manufacture a USB-to-Game Boy Player adapter. It wouldn’t be pretty, but it would be convenient.

Note the red arrow. All we need, as far as I can tell, is a cable that will plug in there and run to a USB port on the back of the Wii. Maybe Nyko will scratch this itch?

I guess the other option is Datel’s Advance Port. But who wants to go that route if you haven’t already?

Don’t forget the new USB driver to talk to it. I’m sure Nintendo owns all of the intellectual property from the Player, so they’d be able to pump one out without legal issues.

But I’m pretty sure Nintendo would shy away from this for marketing reasons. I mean really, is anyone better at mining past franchises with re-re-rereleases of the same games on each new platform that debuts?

If anyone is, I’m not aware of it. I’m going to go with the assumption that Virtual Console is the final resting place of all re-releases, seeing as how all they need to do is get an ESRB rating and put the games up.

This is a cool idea, (gameboy player cable), that I never thought of. First, let me say that I would totally buy such a cable. This brings me to my second thought. I have about 5 GBA games that I actually enjoy playing on the big TV. Assuming such a cable and drivers costs about $20, how cool would it be if they started releasing GBA (and GB and GBC) games on the VC. Release them at 400 points and you achieve a couple of things. First, you enable people to download the games (approx. 5 games) instead of buy the cable. Ok, so this wouldn’t make as much sense if you have a large library of GBA games you want to play on your TV. Second, by adding a 400 point software item, you would make it that much easier for people to take advantage of the 2000 point cards without having 400 left over all the time.

Is there a way to connect gameboy advance to pc?my son is killing me for a way to get his gameboy on bigger screen.

Jay Freeway, if you pick up a Gamecube and a Game Boy Player, you can play your GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and GameBoy Advance games on your TV. That’s the best way to get them on the big screen. Used Gamecubes are around $50, GBPlayers are around $50 as well.
