High Failure Rates for HD Lasers?
Bill Harris at DubiousQuality has a new post up listing some comments from someone in the know about the technology behind the high-energy blue laser LEDs in use in Blu-ray and HD-DVD readers. These blue lasers were blamed for the initial shortages of the PlayStation 3, and it seems the materials and process used to create them is relatively new and isn’t successful enough to scale up well. There’s also one possibly big problem with them.
It seems that the type of blue laser in use in the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players have unknown long-term durability track records. It’s possible that they could have high failure rates in the medium to long term. Or maybe not. But it sounds like an awfully tricky thing to bet on, if that particular DQ reader knows what they’re talking about, anyway.
