Head Start: The XBox 360.
ArsTechnica’s Ben Kuchera, a 360, a 60GB PS3, the Group Marketing Manager for Xbox Live, and the product unit manager for Microsoft’s game technology group all walk into a bar –er, they all go into a room in New York at Microsoft’s invitation. They let Ben lead the conversation, the comparison, the analysis, everything, and Microsoft takes notes.
The article over at ArsTechnica describing the experience is an interesting one and Ben’s thoughts on both systems as they run through the comparisons clearly show Microsoft’s advantage not just in coming out one year ahead but with the critical hardware component of a hardware scaler chip — currently one of the PS3′s major problems. Ben touches on hard drive space, the scaling issue, HD movie playback, and generally lusts after the Sony Bravia screen they tested on. As he should. Those screens are awesome! Anyway, click on through for the details.
I have to admit that I think the lack of a hardware scaler is a critical blunder for Sony. It not only keeps the PS3 games from scaling up on new TVs but it keeps the emulated PS1 and PS2 games from looking as good as they could on HD sets.
