Gears of War Update Makes VGA WORSE

Submitted by on January 9, 2007 – 4:15 pm4 Comments

The patch is out, and anecdotal evidence is rolling in that the supposed fix for 4:3 resolutions on the VGA adapter are looking WORSE than they were before.

For those who weren’t aware, playing on any 4:3 resolution larger than 640×480 (like 1280×1024, for example) would give you a letterboxed image that was also squished, making the whole screen appear flattened like a squished hamburger. Supposedly, this update was supposed to fix this. Well, it did, but many are also reporting that the image quality is MUCH worse. I pray to GOD they get this fixed.

It looks (comparatively) awful now. It didn’t really seem like a problem, I was playing fine in 1280×1024 on a 17″ crt, it looked good and didn’t have any squishing, it was just letter boxed.

It wasn’t a problem for me either. Now, it doesn’t look like it’s anti-aliased. It just makes me wonder if anyone tested this. Why not add an option for 4:3 or widescreen?
