“Gamer Generation” on Discovery HD
Discovery HD has a series of shows in progress called “Gamer Generation“. It’s effectively the same kind of thing we had on CNBC last year with “Game On: The Unofficial History of Video Games,” or the year before with PBS’ “Video Game Revolution,” but I think this one is being handled a bit better. It steers wide of mentioning the brands behind the games, and mentions titles only when they’re a specific case, such as America’s Army. Game On was really The Microsoft Show, Video Game Revolution was a kind of high-speed, somewhat inaccurate summary of gaming.
Rather than being a history, it’s more a state of the industry. Part 1, which appears to be all they’ve aired at this point, is all about PC gaming. I watched it this past Sunday, and it covered Will Wright and The Sims, professional gaming and Starcraft in South Korea, America’s Army and video games as a means of recruiting as well as games in the middle east that are made in response to the popularity of muslims as targets in video games, and it finishes off with the violence in video games controversy (Jack Thompson makes a very reserved appearance).
The show ends with a preview of Part 2, which will be about online gaming. Second Life and World of Warcraft were pictured.
Part 1 is airing again at least once, I see it on my DVR later this week.
