Finally scored a second Wii Remote.
It all comes down to being in the right place at the right time. My wife was shopping in a box store for maybe the dozenth time since we got our Wii, and this was the first time Wii Remotes were in stock, and were they ever. She says they had about ten of them on the wall.
Tuesday seems to be the day to get them. My local GameStop gets their new hardware on Tuesdays via a UPS shipment in the late morning, so the best time to get high-demand hardware there is midday on Tuesday. This goes for Wii systems, controllers, as well as PS3s when supply was short demand on those. They would have a good supply of things at noon, and nothing left by 1PM.
Doing a Sync with additional Remotes is pretty easy. You press the Sync button on the controller (which is hidden under the battery compartment on the back) and the blue LEDs that indicate the player number flash on the face. Then you open the door on the front of the Wii console and press the Sync button there. The console tells the controller what player number it is in charge of, and the appropriate light stays lit on the front of the controller. In my case, light two.
Now we’ve got two Remotes and one Nunchuk. So we’ll need a second Nunchuk to play a number of the games we have multiplayer, including Rayman Raving Rabbids and the boxing game in Wii Sports. I’m expecting a third Wii Remote with my copy of Wii Play in mid-February.
