Epic’s Boss on PS3, “It’s a Beautiful Machine”

Submitted by on January 29, 2007 – 11:07 am4 Comments

sunny_side_up.jpgMany believe that the PS3 is dead in the water. When asked whether He believed Sony was in trouble, Mark Rein of Epic decided to discuss the sunny side of Sony’s PS3.

“Being able to fulfill your order is good news, right? Go out and buy your PS3 now. You can get one. That’s miraculous”, Rein responded in a interview with Game Informer when asked if he thought Sony is in trouble.

“So as long as people are willing to pay the price for the machine-and I’m sure lots of people are-I think they’re hopefully in a good situation. I think they’ve done a good job with their downloadable content. There’s not a lot of games on there, but the ones that are there are really high quality, and I’m really impressed with the games. It’s a beautiful machine, it’s a great-looking piece of equipment, so I think Sony’s going to be fine,” Rein added.

I understand that with UT3 hitting the system, Epic is in no position to lambast the PS3. Even still, there’s a lot of truth in what Mark Rein’s saying here. Sony shipped a hell of a lot of units to the States this month, eating every last cent of air shipping costs. Nitendo opted to save money and stick with standard cargo ship delivery, suffering from extreme shortages (along with misleading sell out impressions) because of it.

There’s also a big fat “I think they’re hopefully in a good situation” in there, as well as a few too many questions that have yet to be answered. Even though he was trying to be positive about the system, he pretty much broke down why so many people have yet to put a PS3 in their living room.

“Hopefully, they’ll have some big, hit must-have games… I think Sony’s going to do great.”

I love my PS3, and couldn’t be any more excited to see what the future holds. I’ve been playing resistance since I got my ps3 back on December 1st, and have not grown bored with it at all, and Fight Night is a ton of fun to play online (though i stink at it haha) The ps3 is a great system. I was over my friends house this weekend and got to play Gears of War on the 360 for the first time, and that game blew me away as well….the graphics are just amazing. I think both systems are great, its great to have a choice. It reminds me of the genesis/super nintendo days. Tons and tons of games, lots of competition, which is a great thing for the consumer. This is a great time to be a gamer.

Bill, if the PS3 was $399 I’d probably own one as well. Probably not at launch, but pretty soon after.

Epic wants a healthy, competitive console market where their games live — in the mid to high-end / hardcore gamer world.

Translation: “We really want the PS3 to do well. We want some leverage against Microsoft’s Xbox Live integration fees and per-unit royalties.” Of course they like the 360 for the same reason — to potentially give them leverage on per-unit royalties for the PS3.

Can they get that leverage? Dunno, and I doubt they’d ever be allowed to talk about it to anyone.

James, it depends what you want in a console though. I love the blu-ray player, it goes well with my 50″ 1080p tv, spending $500 on a video game console and blu-ray player wasn’t/isn’t a problem for me. Like i said its abotu choices, and I love that people have that choice now.
