Epic to Patch their Gears of War Patch
![]()
Mark Rein, who must’ve gotten the short straw, posted the following notice on Epic’s Gears of War forums:
In the next Gears of War update users running 1280×1024 monitors will get true 1280×720 (720p) image letterboxed within 1280×1024. This should give the full HD experience.
Many users spoke up and said they favored playing the game at higher resolution in a letterbox rather than playing it in full-screen mode. To achieve the proper aspect ratio in full screen mode we had to render at 900×720 (the next usable 5:4 resolution below our maximum of 1280×720) and then let the Xbox 360 scale to fit.
As a temporary measure one of our programmers suggested that between now and the next update that users of 1280×1024 monitors might find the picture more pleasing if they set their Xbox to 1024×768 – the aspect ratio is pretty close but the actual resolution is about 45% higher.
While the level of fan service provided by Epic is truly amazing (two new maps AND a major patch a mere 2 months after launch?!?!?), this is still rather disappointing. A lot of people (myself included) don’t WANT letterboxed. We want full screen. Somehow many other developers have managed to pull off the 1280×1024 full screen resolution without looking like total butt.
Oh well. Back to 1360×768, then. I mean, if it’s going to be letterboxed anyway, might as well use a slightly higher and possibly better looking resolution.
