Engadget’s HDMI Enabled 360 is Questionable
As you might have heard, a recent article at Engadget claims the new 65nm chip Xbox 360 will also feature HDMI out and a larger hard drive.
There’s little doubt that larger Xbox 360 hard drives are in the works and that HDMI will eventually be included with a future release of the system. However, I have some questions about the HDMI shown in the “leaked” image as well as the Engadget article itself.
First off, you can see their full image by clicking here. I assume Microsoft has decided NOT to use their own proprietary plug design for the HDMI out? It seems pretty odd, why wouldn’t they just custom design an entirely different HDMI out cable similar to all their current 360 video cables?
Is it the case that the founders of the HDMI format (including Sony) would be entitled to royalties if Microsoft designed their own HDMI cable? I guess that might deter them from doing so. I know the PS3 uses a standard HDMI plug, so maybe Microsoft just wants to keep up with the joneses.
Second, Engadget doesn’t give us any information regarding the credibility of their source. They don’t tell us whether they’ve heard from this, “very kind Xbox insider” in the past and whether his previous predictions, if any, were accurate. For all we know, this is a very pretty photoshop or case mod.
While I think these features will arrive one day in the future, I’m not sure if this is what we can expect. What do you think?
