Early Lost Planet Reviews: Good, Not Great

Submitted by on January 10, 2007 – 9:00 am4 Comments

With costume design like this, how could they go wrong!?!Don’t forget to pack your Long Johns because Lost Planet is hitting your local gamehut this Friday. Early reviews have been a slightly mixed bag, most complaining about game design decisions, a wacky Japanese storyline and questionable AI. That definitely sounds like a Capcom title to me.

I’ve been excited about this one since the minute the E3’06 demo hit my system. There’s just something about it that really sucks me in, it’s really hard to explain. It truly was the first title that I’ve looked forward to on the Xbox 360. At the same time, I’ve found many others didn’t enjoy the demo nearly as much as I have.

I’d have to put it in perspective against a game like Dead Rising, which I never really got into. It’s a great game but the controls drove me away in the end. I enraged a few people yesterday with my opinion of Diddy Kong Racing but it’s exactly that, an opinion. Everyone’s got their own and the comments section is where you share.

How did I get off topic? Anyway, back to Lost Planet.

Metacritic has it at 79% and Gamerankings at 77%, which puts it in the “Good” category. Just like anything else, I’ll have to decide for myself.

I am also a huge fan of the single player demo, multiplayer, not so much. I’m sure I’m not alone here. There just seems like there is too much to like here, I am a bit surprised to see it getting only average reviews…

I think I figured out how to define why the experience left me less than ecstatic.

I think they designed the controls around something that would feel right to Japanese gamers and in the process they out the twitch factor that Westerners have come to love about fps titles.

At least, that’s that the only explanation I have for making the aiming so very slow and actually necessitating the LB and RB to make your character spin left and right, respectively, in 90 degree increments.

I still think the game will sell really well. There isn’t exactly much that’s coming out now that people can spend their money on to play on the 360.

Wow. Excuse my grammar there in that last post. I meant to say that they left out the twitch factor, not “they out”.

i am stunned that this title is only getting average reviews. i played the campaign and multi-player demos for this game. it blows away gears of war, the so called “halo killer”. this game should easily be rated in the 90′s.
