Da Pope Says: “Video Games Are Bad”

Submitted by Richard Windsor on January 24, 2007 – 12:59 pmComments

dapope.jpgDuring the Vatican’s world communications day the Pope let everyone know what he thinks of violent video games. The Pope is a busy guy lately having to shuffle his house of touchy feely priests around the world, it’s good to see he is finally tackling the real issues.

“Any trend to produce programs and products – including animated movies and video games – which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behavior or the trivialization of human sexuality is a perversion, all the more repulsive when these programs are directed at children and adolescents,”

Wow, the Pope says bad things about games…..I’m shocked! I agree the games should not be marketed to kids but I bet if the Pope sat down and played a little gears of war he might just find it a nice release from his daily stress of walking around in a robe and condemning people.

I dunno guys, I was just at a toga party, and robes are pretty damn comfy...no stress there! However, I'm confused...if you agree that violent games shouldn't be marketed to kids...and you condemn the Pope for condemning...aren't you just retarded?

"Heh, wow. It seems someone wants to defend religion. How about a more encompassing attack.
    1) all of the wars started by the Catholic church
    2) they tried to repress literacy to prevent people from "misinterpreting" the Lord's word
3)murder and torture of people who didn't agree with their beliefs
    4) innumerable incidents of corruption and deceit to retain power

I think that's enough for now. I think the Pope is a usless symbol at this point. He's as important as Mickey Mouse or Donald Trump. "

Unfortunatly, your points don't accurately describe the Catholic Church. The Catholic church didn't start any wars or repress literacy or torture anyone. Certainly "religion" is loosely to blame for a lot of historical wrongdoing, but none of the things you mention are anything more than crazy people doing really bad shit. You can't blame the Catholic church for any wars any more than you can blame all white people for slavery or people in non-traditional cults for the actions of nutjobs like David Koresh. The Catholic Church is a very good organization that does FAR more good than harm, as are many religious organizations. It has been subverted by many people over the centuries, as have many good religions. Likewise, people have used science to do horrible things. Look at Mengele and the Nazi experimentation on the Jews. Do you blame science because some wacko used it as his "cause". No, you don't. Nor should you blame religion because some wacko cloaks himself in it.

Anyway, that being said Benedict is looking to be a pretty good Pope. JPII left some darn big shoes to fill, lets hope BXVI is up to it. But, let's NOT listen to him for recommendations on games. Mkay?
  • Your post throws more fuel on a fire than all those people they burned at the stake. Zing!

LOL@Sammael. Well said, and those 4 points are most often found in the context of video games too. Anyway, what public figure DOESN'T diss video games? BTW, science is the new religion.

(plus that pic makes him look downright scary... like kid-toucher scary)

Sorry dre, but to take something said on a game blog that seriously is more of a sign of ignorance. I know people get defensive about religion but come on man, get real!
  • okay, I'll admit it. "touchy feely priests" made me laugh.

This guy is a shell of John Paul and I'm sure he knows it. As far as I'm concerned, the Vatican died with him.
  • Sorry
The guy thinks he directly talks to GOD! If that does not say crazy then what does?

when you stray from valid criticisms into mocking the attire of somebody that is involved in more charitable work than most countries, you don't show much more than ignorance. i would ask you to cite me some of the Pope's condemnations, but i doubt that you've read any of what the Pope has to say beyond the little clip about videogames you mention. keep up the good work, i'm sure the vatican will work hard to improve its image now that it knows you're on the look out.
