Crackdown Very Repetitive But Still Fun

1upshow_rounded.pngThe season premiere of the 1UpShow (Episode 61) has a review of Crackdown in which they say the gameplay is very repetitive with all of the missions revolving around going around and shooting bad guys, and little else. Still, they admit that they all had fun playing it.

They also think that the developer could really give the game legs by releasing add-on patches that could add new mission types and other content, and that they might see lots of emergent gameplay where people will go into the game in co-op just to goof around in a super-powered chat room. You and your pal just talking about other things while doing no-brainer things like blasting criminals or seeing how many cars you can stack up, seeing if your pal can get in a car and how far you can throw that car, you get the idea.

So give it a look when you get some time not just for the hundreds-of-megs download but the show itself. You get the added benefit of seeing just how the game plays through lots of video footage.

It reminds me strongly of the City Of Heroes game in terms of graphics engine and art style. There’s definitely a market for that kind of super-powered camp so we’ll see if the game does well.

It seems my prediction was correct.

“I’ll admit to being a little concerned about the depth of the title, the art style looks eerily similar to State of Emergency”

Reminds me of the olden days of Q3A with the excessive force mod, going into levels and seeing what kind of crazy BFG jumps we could do. This was particularly fun on a map called “runtfest”. What a blast.

I don’t have a problem with shallow titles, as long as they are fun. Repetitive can be good if it’s done right. The nice part is, a sequel is easy, because you can just add some new gameplay elements and it will seem pretty fresh without losing the original fanbase.
