Bioshock to be Single Player Only

Submitted by on January 25, 2007 – 11:39 am5 Comments

bioshock_rounded.pngIt’s a bit of a surprise, but the upcoming Bioshock is not going to have any multiplayer features at all. Stressing an engrossing and compelling single-player story, the developers say that multiplayer is just not something they plan to do with the title to avoid diluting the story’s impact.

This is something of a surprise to me too. While first person shooters have been leaving me cold for a while now — heck I can’t even bring myself to finish Half-Life 2 after absolutely loving Half-Life 1 — you’d think it was a normal thing for developers to staple on a multiplayer mode when they’re creating a new game engine and IP to go with it, a little something to try and give the game online multiplayer legs and maybe try to introduce some new gimmicks.

Seen on Gamespot.

I’m not surprised at all. In fact, I was expecting it. I’m getting sick of all of these games where multiplayer is stapled on just because. Some games just don’t fit the multiplayer scheme. For example :

    Clive Barker’s Undying
    American McGee’s Alice
    Vampire : Bloodlines
    Chronicles of Riddick
    Soul Reaver
    Tomb Raider
    etc, etc, etc.

This doesn’t bother me since if they did have multiplayer, it would probably suck, and might take away from development time on the Single Player experience.

I’m actually very happy it doesn’t have Multiplayer, this means that I might actually get all 1000 achievement points in the game.

This doesn’t surprise me with this game. It just doesn’t seem to fit the MP mold. I do hope that GTA 4 is multiplayer though. Anyone agree?

I’m also of the crowd that doesn’t mind a good single player game. I mean, I don’t expect every single 360 game to have a multiplayer aspect if it doesn’t need one. Oblivion was just fine without it and I’m sure Bioshock will be equally fine as a single player game.

This does not bother me. Look how many good MP games are going to be coming down the pipe for the 360 this year.

Hopefully shadowrun is good as it is very similar in game style, although not in mood or appearance.
