Battlestations Midway Impressions….I Think

Submitted by James Munn on January 19, 2007 – 3:40 pmComments

Dock1.jpgI just played the Battlestations: Midway demo on Xbox 360. At least I think I did, if Battlestations: Midway is a game about staring at an empty dock while my teammates sound like they’re having tons of fun. Yeah, that’s all I did. I would’ve asked for help but I felt like such a freakin’ idiot for not knowing how to do anything, I just logged off. Now I’m writing about it here, I don’t think I really thought this through.

Anyway, I checked the page of nightmarish controls while playing online, but that didn’t help. I fired the demo up last night and was actually able to somehow control a plane, but I don’t know how I did it. It controlled like a plane but I was so worried about accidentally switching off of it and getting stuck at the dock again, I couldn’t really enjoy it.

Can someone fill me in here?

Actually the game is initially quite hard due to the lack of instructions and the numerous configuration of controls (i.e. planes, boats and submarines) not to mention each one has its own strengths and weaknesses, however once you grasp the fundemantals is easy enough to figure out.

All in all I think the game is real fun. Yes there are times when it can be boring, i.e. you launch your boats/submarines and you just have to sit back and wait til they get to their destination, however once the battle heats if it can be real fun.

Depending on how the battle unfolds, how good your team mates and opponents are and how long you can survive have seen some battles lasting for up to an hour and more.

The key fundementals are pretty much as follows: -

Once you've selected your slot (i.e. ship yard, airfield, carrier) and the game starts the first thing you have to do is select what type of unit you want to use. For example for the airfield/aircraft carrier, you can select either a fighter, a dive bomber or a torpedo bomber. Additionally for the planes you also can change the weapons (or on a small scale).

In order to access the window to select the unit you want you have to press the right bumper button when you are at either your airfield/carrier deck or ship yard. A window then appears (for the ship yard you have 2 assignments and for the airfield/carrier you have 3 assignments). Then using the D-pad (not the joysticks) you press down, from there you can scroll by pressing left/right on the D-pad to select what kind of unit you want. If you wish to change the weaponry (give that its possible to change for the unit you've selected) you press down again to scroll through the available weapons (I believe, from memory that this can only be done for the planes). Once you've finished your decision you press A to launch the unit. You then do the same for the second (and for planes, 3rd) assignments).

Once everythings launched you can use the D pad to move from unit to unit.

The main things is obviously to win the battle by taking out the enemys airfield/carrier and ship yards.

As such you can set tragets for each of your units to attach whether it be an airfield/carrier, boat, sqadron of plans, etc.

In the game you can either fly/sail around using the joysticks, or you can play from the map (back button).

The most important thing is taking out enemy targets. I prefer to use the map initially then go between the map and live action to ensure that all my units have targets to attach. Sometimes I take control of my units to get some hands on action (as the A.I can sometimes make movements, etc which a real person could execute better).

In order to assign targets you go into the map (back button). In the map you will see the map with all of battle going on. Using the D-pad scroll left and right through your units. The unit selected shows up yellow rather then orange. Once selected move the joysticks and a cross hair moves around the map. Move over and enemy traget and press A. This will then assign that unit to that target to attack. You will also see a red arrow appears showing that the unit is moving to the target. The unit will continue to move towards the target no matter where the target moves too. If you want to move a unit to a place without it being a target you just do the same think but with no specific target. A blue arrow then appears showing that you've set a waypoint for that unit to move to. You can then link way points to give your unit a specific route to take.

Obviously there are fundemental rules that apply. For example fighters machine will do no or extremely little damage to boats/carriers and to inflict damage you need to use either a torpedo bomber or a dive bomber attached with bombs. Likewise now vessel will be able to take out a submarine with the excpetion of a destroyer (DD) unless the subs on the surface when it acts just like a normal boat.

As soon as a unit has been destroyed scroll through your items using the D-pad again (either in game or in the map mode) until you return back to your native airfield or shipyard, press the right bumper button and it will bring back up the assignment window, from there you can see which units free (in the shipyards the empty slot will be either a 1 or 2, if a vessel/subs active you'll see an arrow of some form. For the planes a free/dead squardon will have a skull and cross bones in it). Just as before use your D-pad move down, select what type of unit you want and press A to launch.

That basically is the fundemental control to the game. There is a lot more things to do, i.e. repair ships that are taking damage, give units specific order to do. i.e. land, attack, weapons free, etc. But you'll just need to figure them out as I done.

These instruction above are for the demo version and am sure, once the actual game comes out there's going to be even more instructions and techniques that have to be adopted in order to successfully win the way.

I hope that this is of some help to you all and if you need anymore tips then just send me a message through xbox live where my gametag is glenhoy

Enjoy the game and hopefully we can wage war on each other one day.

Its not an amazing game, but ITS FUCKING EASY TO FIGURE OUT THE CONTROLS James. Use your head.

When I fired up the demo for the first time, I was utterly confused too... mind you, nobody would be confused if they actually looked at the controls in the Options in the Main Menu... I did not.

All I did, was push every button until it did something, I figured out how to play the game this way, every time I wanted to do something, I pushed every button to see what happened.

Personally, I'm not really crazy about controlling the airfields/ aircraft carriers despite the fact flying the planes is fun, but the boats and naval yards are just plain awesome.

I don't know how you guys figured that out. I couldn't get it either.
  • You use the right bumper to bring up your deployment menu. The dockyard can launch two ships, you have to choose the types by going down into the menu and pushing left/right. Then hit A to launch them.

Cycle through units with left and right on the d-pad. Back button is map view, use a to target or set waypoints and b to clear all orders.

Also this should help some. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/756/756600p1.html

PS: When in doubt mash buttons until something happens.

The dock is the objective that the enemies must destroy if I remember right

Let's say you chose have plane carrier...you have to launch your planes with RB i think. And when you they are taking off you push on your right stick to get in and take control of it, and if I remember correctly you can cycle through your vehicle with the A button and take control of them all
