Anyone else have trouble with Opera Wii today?

Submitted by on January 3, 2007 – 9:29 pmOne Comment

tornpaper.pngSo the web browser on my Wii spontaneously stopped working today. Pages won’t load, and if I wait long enough, it will completely lock up the console, requiring me to hold the power button on the system to shut it down.

Error messages suggest I try other online functions, presumably to make sure my connection’s working at all (it is, I can check the weather in the Weather Channel), and I’ve tested a laptop with the wireless connection to confirm it is working.

I’m going to have a look around and see how I go about redownloading the browser. Maybe I have to delete the channel and then grab it off Wii Ware again.

    Wait! Before you redownload it….

    1. Do you have multiple Internet connection settings configured? I’ve once seen my Wii spontaneously (maybe after an update?) set the “active” settings to an unexpected selection, so it may be worth going there and making sure the right one has the red brackets around it.

    2. Sometimes the Wii will not want to connect right away. It may help to do a connection test, from the Internet settings menu, to “unstick” things.

    3. Wiis seem to not like low-signal-strength (one bar) connections, which may also mean that it won’t like RF signal interference.

I have yet to give a proper test to Opera for Wii because neither of the connections I’ve had available over the holiday have been at more than one signal bar, and it seems to really hate poor connections, sometimes going so far as to freeze the system. (When this happens, the first thing to try in getting your Wii going again is to hold the power button on the console for several seconds, try that before pulling the power cord.)

If all else fails, try backing up your Opera settings to a SD card then deleting the setting file in system memory. If you do download it from scratch, note that the Opera channel can be backed up to such a card. I don’t know if any information internal to the channel is modified during the browser’s operation, but considering that the Forecast Channel has no visible information in the save management screen, it seem that it is possible.
