$60 too much for games?

Does anyone besides me remember $60 NES games? Apparently, $50 is the most we’re willing to pay for brand-new premium console games, because GameDaily has an article up analyzing how long $60 price tags can last. They mention that EA’s X360 games (such as Madden and Tiger Woods) are getting cut from $60 to $50 pretty quickly after hitting the market, while the last-gen counterparts were cut by $20.

Kotaku had a simliar post a couple of weeks ago, referring to a Forbes article on why Gears of War costs $60. The Forbes article broke it down into a lovely pie chart, accounting for everything down to broken dev kits.

Hell, I remember paying $80 for Final Fantasy 2 (SNES version). It was worth it though. Now, not so much.

I’m pretty sure Street Fighter 2 for the SNES was $75 when I bought it.

I own about 100 current and last gen games for my consoles and PC and I have never paid $60 or more for a game. Nor will I.
The most I remember ever seeing an NES game for was $54.99 for SMB3. I laughed then and I laugh now.
I have only paid $49.99 for a game 2 or 3 times ever (a la fucking nintendo wouldn’t drop the price on double dash for like a year and I got tired of waiting, then it dropped like a month later!). I am usually 6 months to a year behind on my gaming and this suits me just fine. I actually love the fact that impatient people who must have the newest thing help subsidize my gaming habits by paying the boosted release pricing. I rarely pay more than $29.99 for a title and only when it’s a good one. Otherwise I usually pick them up when they hit 19.99 or pick them up used.

As for th $60 not be sustainable, they know the people who buy games like Gears on the first few weeks are suckers so they jam them with a high price. You want the game now? YOu’re gonna pay. Thats fine with me. The higher the initial price gets, the quicker it will make that first drop. It only makes sense. They are just trying to jam the early adopters before hitting the mass market that probably hasn’t heard of the game yet anyway.

Its a pretty good model really.
