1up.com’s For Sale, Worth….This Much

Word on the street is that the 1up Network is for sale. Ziff Davis, the media conglomerate which pretty much controls everything you see or hear about video games now, is selling a a finger off of the iron fist. Said finger has a few warts, including EGM, Games For Windows magazine, and the 1UP.com network.

Technically, 1up.com is a mess. The website looks like one massive banner ad and is one of the few gaming sites that I try to avoid as much as possible. The content is normally decent, but I have no idea why they chose to take the site design in that direction.

So above you see my offer for the 1up.com Network. Ten cents, a strand of grey thread (not shown). a couple of wads of pocket lint and a paper clip. Give me a ring, Ziff Davis, we’ll do lunch.

I see just nine cents. Did you up your bid just before the post to seal the deal? You sly, savvy businessman, you.

  • James

It’s 10 cents, two of the pennies are stacked up next to the rusty paperclip.

  • Bill

I don’t know why. Some of 1up’s contributers seem at first to be retarded. But on a second read of the articles that might be insulting to actual retarded people.

  • Subnet6

    Great, pic!

Although, I think you may have overshot the mark.

Remember, when you offer to buy something, you can always move your offer up, but you can’t negotiate down. So don’t start so high unless you really think it’s worth it!

  • Maxathon

Not fair, honestly. 1up’s writers can be juvenile, but their coverage is of as high a quality as any I’ve found (short of the Game Developer network, which isn’t exactly geared to the mass market). They compete with Gamespot and IGN for readership, but in terms of quality there’s no contest at all.

  • McManamus

Great!, minus another one juvenile ad-ridden wasteland. Next target, IGN.

  • XAQ!(aeropause)

Actually, EGM is by far my favorite gaming magazine. They have top-notch coverage and humerous, entertaining writing methods. If you want to list a wart, try PSM, especially since anything Playstation seems to suck really bad nowadays. Even PSM knows it. Try reading one of their 20 dollars of crap magazines. But yeah, the 1up.com site and blog stuff is crap, the layout is crap, but at least the 1up show is descent.

Also: Mcsomethingoranother: I don’t see how IGN is a juvenile banner-filled wasteland. IGN is far superior to Gamespot.

    “Technically, 1up.com is a mess.”

Says an editor of the site whose horizontal navigation bar needlessly fills the top of every page, thereby pushing articles completely below the fold even when the browser window is maximized at 1024×768 resolution.

  • Cal

Its funny but I love 1up, I think they give great reviews and I love their podcast, mebbe its just a matter of taste…

“Says an editor of the site whose horizontal navigation bar needlessly fills the top of every page, thereby pushing articles completely below the fold even when the browser window is maximized at 1024×768 resolution.”

Hey, 1997 called, they want their screen resolution back!

    Welcome to the new Millennium. 1600×1200 is the new 1024 x 768. 1280 x 1024 is the new 800 x 600.

    Is your monitor Monochrome too?

  • 11440

Some of us in the new millennium use laptops and have sense enough to trade screen size for portability.

  • Harry

    haha Subnet6.

11440: It’s called a blog and you’ll see the same layout on every page. I have my resolution at 1024 and I can see everything perfectly fine.

  • Subnet6

“Some of us in the new millennium use laptops and have sense enough to trade screen size for portability.”

Hey, if you knowingly traded screen size for portability, what right do you have to complain that this website doesn’t render perfectly on your super
    “portable” screen?

So, you didn’t answer my question? Is it monochrome? I imagine not rendering all those crazy colors might be a nice trade off for longer battery life.

Looks like Dell bought 1up. GayGamer posted the story tonight.
