XFPS 360 – Good or Bad?

Submitted by on December 20, 2006 – 5:42 pm8 Comments

xfps121.jpgSoon 360 owners will be able to buy the new XFPS, which will allow a keyboard & mouse to function with the 360. While I love the idea of this pheripheral, I wonder if this will make certain online games less balanced considering how much easier aiming with a mouse is. I have yet to play with the XFPS but I am wondering if any of our readers plan to pick one up over the next few weeks, and do you think it’s fair considering most will still play with a controller?

If I were at all competitive in my online gaming then I might consider grabbing one of these. As a mostly casual gamer (playing from a couch that sports no place for a keyboard and mouse) I’ll probably stay clear for now.

I don’t really understand the PC controls are superior to a gamepad sentiment. I play FPS both on my PC and on consoles and I haven’t noticed any difference in what I am able to do. I think someone needs to do a big scientifically sound study to settle this once and for all.

I think there is a huge difference in keyboard/mouse over gamepad. You can move a lot faster, and its a lot easier to be accurate. And I do think this will be a bit unfair, I don’t plan on buying it, because like stated above I play on my couch and don’t have the place for a keyboard/mouse. And I can definetly see i disadvantage to peopel who don’t use it….just my .02

ouch, that’s completely unfair, mouse will kill controller on a fps every time. unless this becomes standard in a fps game, then ranked matches will no longer be a true test of skill ( in a perfect utopia where there are no mods or hacks)

You are all correct. The reason is that games made for consoles don’t allow the full advantage of keyboard and mouse.

Has anyone here every played Halo on a PC?

My goodness, what a piece of shit that is. But I loved it on xbox, how is that possible that a shooter could be better with dual analog?

The reason is that Halo was built for xbox. When you play it on a PC, it feels sluggish compared to true PC FPS games. You don’t get the advantage of the kb/m when a game isn’t designed for super fast aim/shooting.

A few years ago, I would have claimed kb/m would kill console shooters everytime. Now, I would only make this statement if the game was DESIGNED for kb/m and not the other way around. Also in game design, they know that certain movements are difficult to master on a dual analog, for example: up and down on the diaganol is hard to do accurately. So designers build levels to avoid those types of movements. AI is written such that enemy movements are more easily tracked with simple strafe movements.

If you look closely, you’ll notice the difficult enemies to get a bead on are moving up/down while moving side to side. You won’t see this movement much in console shooters, but it’s common in FPS shooters.

So if the game is designed for a console, kb/m won’t have a huge advantage.

How the heck will the games work with this? Won’t they have to be programmed to work with keyboard and mouse?

The fact that this is a third party solution combined with the broken english on the website makes me think that this won’t be widely adopted.

Anyone ever heard of the SmartFrag Joy for the Xbox and PS2? It’s basically the same device here that allows a user to use kb/m to play their FPS games for their consoles. They now defunct lik-sang were their main producers.

I bought one when I heard they came out for Halo 2 and in all honesty I can see the advantage when playing with it. My friend who played on controller and eventually got said he could tell the difference when using it.

But over time I could see that I was better with kb/m but still wasn’t as good as other people. I would have to say I was above average, but no where near as god-like as the higher level players (maybe I just didn’t invest enough time). But a majority of the time I was top 3 on the map.

Like Subnet6 says, if the game is designed for the console, there won’t be a major advantge to kb/m. Why you say? AUTO-AIM. I could easily tell how auto-aim could easily help the controller player. Sniping was the major area, when using kb/m you have to be dead accurate because you over compensate when playing.

All, in all I can see myself buying this because I’ve been playing kb/m for halo so long I can’t see myself not playing without kb/m.

Hopefully I will get an X360 and buy one of these due to a controller being generally wank all round for fps games.
