Xbox Live Neutered Gears of War

Submitted by on December 28, 2006 – 10:10 am5 Comments

Snip Snip! While some of you have moved on from Gears of War, the monthly statistics still show it as the #1 played Xbox Live title. This is scary, especially when a disruption in service occurs.

Yesterday, Xbox Live was causing disconnects with Gears of War, disabling the ability for players to fire up Single or Multiplayer games. The only workaround was to play the game under a non-Xbox Live enabled account. There was no workaround to play online.

The only correspondence I saw online from Epic was this post from a Forum Moderator at the Epic website:

"There is a problem with XBox Live. We’ll all just have to wait it out."

Major Nelson sends word today the the outage has been repaired but the problem has already been exposed.  Xbox Live is excellent, but disabling an entire community due to error should hopefully push Microsoft to rethink how Live phones home in the future.

Is there anyone out there who didn’t have this problem yesterday?

So you can’t play single player games of Gears when Xbox Live isn’t working? What kind of a stupid-ass game design is that? Do all Live games work that way?

  • Shane

No you could still play SP games, just not co-op online single player games. I couldn’t play any multiplayer games either. I was pretty dissapointed!

Xbox Live has been going for 6 years and this is only the 2nd time something like this has happened..if you ask me thats a pretty good track record. It was a bummer that I could not play Gears last night but I delt with it.

You could play online, but you had to either disconnect your 360 from the internet via unplugging the cable, or log in with a Silver Xbox Live account.

Apparently this wasn’t only for Gears, but Xbox Live altogether. Unfortunately, Gears had trouble with Single Player when connected online.

In general, it’s the first outage I’ve experienced since getting the 360 which is pretty impressive. Especially considering Sony’s servers went down when Gran Turismo became available for download.

The cost of being free, I guess.

I was able to play single-player only with system link by myself, anything else would start to load then kick me back to previous menu.
