What if Sony Fails?

Submitted by on December 1, 2006 – 11:15 am5 Comments

ps3-card-slider.jpgThere is no doubt Sony has made mistakes [as James has already pointed out] with the PS3, and in all reality these mistakes will cost them some market-share. Although what would gaming be like if Sony stopped making consoles all together. Would there be enough room on the market for another company to come forward with new hardware. Can you say “Samsung Playbox”…probably not! It might sound crazy, but with the recent shakeup of management at Sony this is a real possibility now. If the PS3 fails it would almost be assured that we would not see a PS4. Sega tried many times to win back the hearts of gamers and we all know how that turned out for them.

If Sony left Microsoft and Nintendo on their own in the next console cycle who would win? Would Nintendo finally make a machine worthy of all graphic whores? Would Microsoft feel complacent and slack off a few features since they now have less competition? The war between console manufacturers is what has always seemed to drive the innovation forward. If the competition ceases to exist will game systems stop evolving and become carbon copy after carbon copy. I actually hope that the PS3 ends up with a modicum of success in order to keep each company on its toes. If a company sees an area where they can cut back they will but with competition they are forced to keep the best tech in their machines. So even if you hate the PS3, 360 or Wii, just think what things might be like without them.

What do you think will happen if there is no PS4? Let us know in the comments section.

Metal Gear Solid will be fully unbound from the shackles of Sony hardware!

What will happen if Sony fails? Jesus will return, Great Cthulhu will rise from sunken R’lyeh, the X-ians will visit the Earth, gas will be $1 a gallon again, etc.

What will really happen when Sony fails? Not a damn lot. For being the number one player out there for so long, I don’t think they are in all that central a place in the market. There’s always Microsoft and Nintendo on-hand to fill their spot in the food chain.

Microsoft only needs to make a console better than the competition. The reason 360 is so powerful is to out-do the PS3. Without the PS3, or PS4, they only need to out-do… the Wii. So I wouldn’t expect any major advancements in processing power or graphics from the new Microsoft monopoly. Only competition can provide make better products.

If Sony gave up, Microsoft would probably leave the market too. They are the first to admit that they only built the Xbox to scare Sony out of their home-computer market share. I’d be surprised if Microsoft made more than one additional system in the absence of that.

I don’t think the PS3 is going to fail, and if it is it’s way to early to tell; it hasn’t even been a month yet. From everything I’ve seen it seems to me the PS3 launch went off better than the Xbox 360 launch. After the Xbox 360 launch we rarely saw another one in a store until the next March, the PS3 has at least had several, albeit small, shipments. Also, I’ve heard a heck of a lot less complaints about the PS3 failing than I did about the Xbox 360, although that could be because fewer people have them. Admittedly after I couldn’t find a PS3 I went out and bought an Xbox 360, but when I can find one I plan to buy a PS3. Honestly, most of the people I know said they would rather have a PS3 than an Xbox 360, but they also couldn’t afford either of them. The only thing you can really do is wait. People have been convinced tha the PS3 was going to fail since before it launched, just like many people were convinced the 360 was going to fail before its launch, but in reality it’s even still to early to determine whether or not the Xbox 360 is going to fail.
