The HD disk format wars are over.

hddvd_bluray_1_200612.jpgThe Inquirer has a new opinion piece up describing the undisputed winner of the HD disk format wars that seem to have just gotten started. With Blu-ray and HD-DVD slugging it out in the trenches of only the high-end videophile’s living rooms, you’d think it would take a bit longer than a few months to see the clear winner. Charlie Demerjian lists all of the negatives of each side, followed by a snap judgement in favor of the best way to see video content, high-def or not: piracy.

Sure, piracy is free, but price isn’t what gets him angry about what the Blu-ray and HD-DVD camps have done to screw over the consumer in so many ways. See just what he’s talking about here. While Aeropause doesn’t condone piracy, and I personally don’t condone it either, it’s hard to reward these two camps buy buying their disc format. Of course, I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with good old DVD and still see many years left in that disc format but who am I? I’m just a consumer, what do I know.

The article mentioned is a perfect example of why no one should ever read the inquirer. Nevermind the fact that it is a very poorly written rant, but it cites no specific sources, doesn’t mention a single actual fact, and makes assumptions based on misinformation.

Sure, its fun that an “established” site would post an article condoning piracy, even if it is simply to make a point about the negative repception of HD formats. But seriously this article is really a waste. There is little or no actual, useful information in it.

The guy makes a few decent points if you allow for the fact that any supporting information must be presupposed by the reader, however, my conclusion would be much different.

    It is: UPSCALED DVD.

Hello. Anyone following video technology lately should know that the best upconverting DVD players produce images at 720P/1080I and even some at 1080P that VERY closely rival the quality of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD at a fraction of the price and without replacing your DVD library. With advanced user features and HDMI support, the accessibility of upconversion makes the necessity of HD-DVD or BR much less potent.

Hm, upscaled DVD. I hadn’t thought of that.

I decided a few months ago due to trends and what I thought about both players that DVD is still the winner. There will not be enough support for a better media player for at least 10 years. Barely 10% of homes have HDTVs anyway. I mean even the HDTV makers are amazed how slow HD sales are. 1 of every 4 TVs purchased are HDTVs according to a market study but nearly half of those HDTVs get returned because people don’t even know what HD is or how to hook it up.
The fact is, upscaled DVD players have a near quality to digital cable. I don’t own either HD player but I’ve seen them at best buy. I do have HD cable and an upscalable DVD player. For $10 less you can buy a DVD compared to the others. For $80 you can buy an upscaling DVD player. That’s hundreds less than either HD player.

I recommend to anyone wanting to watch HD movies to get onDemand Stars or Showtime with their cable service. They do offer HD movies on both channels both on demand and on TV. Besides, DVDs aren’t that much lower quality.
