Testing the Wii Remote Strap

Still think the strap is weak after seeing this pic? Check out Nintendojo’s test. Remember, keep the strap on your wrist – I know straps have been breaking, but how many people have thrown their remote into the TV and blamed it on the wrist strap? It’ll get ya out of trouble with your mom, if you blame Nintendo and not yourself, won’t it?

It would be interesting to see a map of the amount of force generated when someone pitches the controller from their hand, as compared to hanging a pile of heavy stuff from it. Do you follow? When you run, you put much more shock on your knees than the weight of your body because of the motion involved.

Do they mention that in the article? I haven’t been able to reach Nintendojo for a couple of weeks.

Oops, now I see that in the comments at Crunchgear.

    Hmmm…that’s kind of a stretch..don’t you think?

While a static stress test is difficult to translate into a motion equivalent, it still shows the straps as being pretty sturdy despite their small size.

The second half of the experiment shows him attempting to fling the remote into a couch using in-game motions and he was not able to break it even when using excessive force.

This isn’t to say that straps aren’t breaking in the “wild” but rather that the strap is strong enough for all but the most intense movements. Movements that it wasn’t meant for but is being asked to contain.

Nintendo seems to realize that people are using the wii with a much greater intensity than they initially anticipated and so they have offered a free replacement strap for those who want it.

I doubt many will do it though so it’s really just an effort to silence the incredibly loud internet critics of the strap. I think its a good move.

    I agree Subnet… at least it’s a good customer-relations move on Nintendo’s part.
