Sony Spokesman Puts Foot In Mouth

Submitted by on December 12, 2006 – 10:03 am6 Comments

foot_in_mouth.jpgCan Sony ever just congratulate or be kind to the competition….yeah I guess not, but still even after the Wii crushed the PS3 for popularity the Sony PR machine keeps on rolling. In a statement by Dave Karraker [love the name by the way] he summarizes the company’s feeling about the Wii:

“We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3…If they do pick up a Wii, it’s as more of a novelty”

I know all the game companies talk a little trash every now and then but Sony always seems to try and hit below the belt. Nintendo is a part of every gamers youth and making fun of the company that gave way to the console market is just plain stupid. CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!

  • Jacob

I don’t really think that is below the belt.
They clearly said the playstation fan is going to wait until they can get a ps3 and that is probably pretty accurate. Im going to wait till I get one (probably when gta4 comes out) and even if for some odd reason I did get a wii it pretty much would be a novelty.

  • Nathan

He’s right. The guy did say playstation fan. Since we don’t expect much out of a playstation fanboy’s thought process, they probably would be shallow enough to think of the Wii as a novelty. While the rest of us 4 million Wii owners think of it as the thing that takes over the game industry and kills the Playstation legacy.

Whether or not some idiot thinks of competition such as Nintendo as a novelty or not, they have sold 3 million more units than PS3. DS still outsells PSP. PSP is dead. Even the GBA outsells the PSP. By this time next year, I don’t think it’s that crazy to think the Wii will have sold at least 7 million systems and the PS3 won’t even break 3 million. I’m not talking resells either, I mean seller to user.

Well, it isn’t as though Nintendo is any less pejorative or unjustifiably self-assured. Nintendo keeps advancing the conceit that it will transcend the console war this generation while Sony and Microsoft grapple in the muck.

As for the PlayStation legacy, let’s not forget that Sony did much to expand and evolve the industry in the late 90s, during which time the Nintendo 64 floundered due to a dearth of quality games.

Oh, I MALAPROPWN3D myself. I meant that the Nintendo 64 foundered.

  • Moniker

Hey Jacob – A Novelty! You and Sony are all that is wrong with gaming!

  • Bill

I think in a way Nintendo themselves has even said the wii is more of a novelty. If you look at their ads, and the way they are marketing the wii they are gearing the wii more towards people who are not hardcore gamers, they are geared more towards people like my girlfriend, or parents. So from a “gamers” perspective I can see what sony is saying here. I’ve read a lot of articles from peole that state whether you buy a 360 or a ps3, you should also get a wii, and I think a lot of people are going to that. it’s like a secondary console for most “gamers”. It is what it is.
