Are you one of those people who practically gets lost in your own backyard? If you have a PSP, go to Play Asia and pick up this GPS unit which plugs into the top. It’s $60. Typical GPS software will be released, along with software that will let you use it as an astronomy tool.

According to Gear Factor, a few games will actually benefit from this device. One will be Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, which is going to have a minigame that requires players to hunt down real locations. Since this GPS unit is technically Japanese, you might just have to make a flight to Japan to do so! Another game will be Minna no Golf-jou that will have real courses plotted in and tell you how far you are from the hole. Interesting.

I haven’t seen any word of this coming to the US. Yes the 3.00 and later firmwares support it, but until it shows up here no sale.

I have seen that the golf game will support GPS only in Japan, and there’s no mention of any GPS software being available anywhere in the US.

I also haven’t seen mention of it in any US review of the Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops game. It could be that this functionality has been dropped in favor of running the Access Point IP address through one of those servers that guesses your general location.
