PSP Camera Allows no-PC YouTube Upload

    By James Munn | December 22, 2006

YouTube.JPGOnline video sharing is a huge part of the resurgence of the internet. Sites like YouTube, Photobucket and AOL Video allow users to upload their videos to the masses. It’s pretty amazing how quickly it’s taken off.

Catering to this fact, it’s been discovered that anyone with an official PSP camera can record video and upload them directly to YouTube via the system’s built-in web browser. Add that feature to a saving those videos as “Private” and you’ve got your own personal video messaging system.

In Japan, Sony signed a small promotional deal with Ameba.jp, which seems to be a YouTube competitor in Japan. Seeing a deal like that made me realize that something like this might be possible. PSP-Vault has the details:

“After you’re logged in, scroll down and click on the “Add New Video” button. Enter the video information, then click “Go upload a file.” Push the “Select” button (on the website, not on your PSP), and you’ll see a list of your Memory Stick’s folders show up. Choose “/DCIM,” then “101MSDCF.” This is the folder of your Memory Stick that contains videos and pictures you’ve recorded using your PSP camera. Select the filename of the video you want to upload — since there are no thumbnails, this is where the memo you made earlier will come in handy. Be sure to select the .AVI file instead of the .THM file; the .THM file is just a thumbnail and is not needed for YouTube.

Once you’ve selected your file, scroll down and push “Upload video.” Unfortunately the PSP’s browser capabilities are somewhat limited, so you won’t get the progress meter that you would normally see when uploading videos using your PC. But, you can look at your LAN and Memory Stick indicator LEDs to verify that there is activity.”

PSP-Vault has also opened a shop selling the PSP Camera and the PSP GPS system.
