Power Weapons & Complainers

Submitted by on December 11, 2006 – 8:57 am10 Comments

cry baby gears.jpgExcuse the rant…..but during one of my multi-player Gears of War sessions I was accosted by a 30 year old man who apparently didn’t like the fact that I was using the Hammer of Dawn so successfully. After every round he would complain and say things like “Why don’t you use a real weapon” or “The hammer is for sissies”. The sad part of this was the fact that the guy complaining was using the hammer as well. I know the feeling people get when they get hammered and grenade tagged in Gears, it sucks, but I have been overwhelmed by the amount of cry babies online who complain about it. Power weapons serve a purpose in Gears and that is to influence teamwork. If you don’t work as a team then guess what, it’s your own fault that you got tagged or hammered, so stop complaining!

I am all for trash talking online, as long the intent is not cruel or overly obscene, but to trash talk over the power weapons is just absurd. I guess according to this 30 year old man I am just supposed to leave the hammer alone and let my team get fried into chunks by their hammer….hmmmmm yeah I don’t think so.

Sorry for this rant but it is something I just wanted to get off my chest. I would love to hear our readers opinions on what they think about power weapons and the people who complain about them. Leave us your opinion is our comments section.

Thing is, on any of the maps with the hammer of dawn, there are areas of the map where you can go indoors, thus rendering yourself protected from any hammer strikes.

It’s nothing like the imbalance that the Rocket Launcher renders in Halo 2.

If the weapon is in the level, its up for grabs.

HOWEVER, in my humble opinion, the whiners are only marginally worse than the people who whine about the whiners. Do us all a favor, quit whining about the whiners and just put them out of the misery.

It happens in every online game imaginable, with the only difference being the weapon/character/car/whatever. It’s basically a way for scrubs to shift blame for their underperforming to something else. They’re not losing because they’re not as skilled, it’s because you’re abusing overpowered facets of the game. They want a scapegoat, they’ll find one (and in the absence of a scapegoat, they’ll cry laaaaaag).

In F.E.A.R., I got called cheap because I use the HV Penetrator and remote bombs and have people constantly moaning about them both. I say that maybe they should use the HV Penetrator too (ignoring the fact it takes forever to reload and needs more accuracy than any other weapon bar the sniper rifle) and either take the remote bombs themselves so I can’t get them or place a mine by them to make it difficult for me to get to, like all other good F.E.A.R. players do. But no, they continue to cry about the weapons and not actually do a damn thing about it. Apparently, I’m supposed to play F.E.A.R. by their unwritten laws and rules, which I’m not privy to until I start winning.

    Sound familiar?

In Gears Of War, it’s the sniper rifle that sees me on the wrong end of foul-mouthed tirades. The sniper rifle is the only reason I play Gears and even though it has a very obvious weakness – that it’s worthless close up, surprising for a sniper rifle, I know – people would rather cry about it. I don’t use the Hammer of Dawn because I’m not that good with it but even I can see its main weakness. Long start-up time, useless up close, can give away position, leaves you hella exposed to snipers… it’s as much a curse as it is a blessing.

And so it goes for every online game I’ve ever played, I’ve heard people moan about everything. In SFII Hyper Fighting, it’s Ryu/Ken players. In Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, it’s the chopper. In Dead Or Alive 4, it’s Hayabusa. In Rockstar’s Table Tennis, it’s Jesper. In Pro Evolution Soccer 6, it’s Brazil. In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, it’s Smoke. And so on and so on and so on…

There are certain things I don’t like in games – grenade tagging in Gears Of War always makes my blood boil – but rather than crying about it, I’d rather figure out a counter-tactic, find the weakness, see where I’ve gone wrong.

That’s the difference between silent winners and crybaby losers on Live.

The idea that someone can run and fire a sniper rifle accurately is rediculous. That gun shouldn’t even have a crosshair if you’re moving. Snipers are made for camping, not people assaulting the front line.

Even so, if some dude headshots me after coming out of a barrel roll and strafe-running full speed, why would I whine? That’s just the way Epic intended it to be. If you don’t like it, don’t play it.

Unfortunately, I don’t like it so I really don’t play it. I try, I honestly do fire it up now and again, but I prefer the online play of GRAW and Rainbow Six Vegas over Gears any day.

It’s not really the gameplay itself, just the lack of variety in the game modes. I’m dying for an assault gametype instead of just another “kill the other guy”.

  • FRIENDofANIMALS

I can relate. Every time I play Gears I hear the same things. The chainsaw is cheap. F#^%ing Microsoft. The grenades aren’t fair. That guy is too good with the sniper, he must be cheating. That guy hacked his shotgun to one-kill every time!
Get over it sissys! It’s a level playing field. People are sometimes just better than you, or luckier than you.

  • SP420

No matter what type of game you play, you will ALWAYS hear whiners attempting to cover up their insecurities because they can’t match up to you or others in that game. It will never end. Simple as that.

  • Weyoun42

I had a friend that quit playing the original PC Doom with me because “the BFG is a cheat weapon.” I’m sure decades ago people complained that rock was a cheat weapon in rock-paper-scissors. Apparently any weapon that someone uses better than someone else isn’t fair. Sorry, but deathmatching isn’t about being fair, it’s about the person with the most skill killing the other people. The level starts fair and balanced and then it’s a game of ability. If you’re just not as good, don’t blame the loss on the other guy’s gun. You can use that gun too, you just aren’t as good at it. And that is why you fail.

  • Lord_Satorious

Grenade tagging doesn’t bother me. If someone can get close enough to you to melee with a grenade, then it’s your fault for not shooting them before allowing them to get that close. You have a shotgun for a reason, but nobody learns to use it.

Actually James, snipers are made for sniping. Camping is when you’re denying some important item on the map, like a weapon or power-up, by hanging around it. There was always supposed to be a distinction between sniping and camping, but somehow sniping became camping, and thus sniping is considered cheap. I don’t consider either invalid tactics. I was once called a ‘camper’ just for going prone in “Rainbow Six”! I was like, ‘what am I camping on?’

  • Omnipy

The simple way to look at it is, if you were in a war in real life against a horrible enemy who weilded rocks and when going out to war you had a choice between a rock which would be fair or a rocket launcher which would bring you to victory(which is the point of war mind you…winning). Which would you choose?

  • N vizabul

Honestly there are no cheap or abused weapons in GOW, just tactics. For instance if you and 3 other friends have your specialized weapons that you like to use and you happen to be hosting the room, you have the option to swap the weapons in the map to fit what you want. If someone doesn’t like the idea of getting tagged with grenades all the time, then do what I do. Host a match and just swap all weapons with grenades. Then everyone will just blow everyone else up. (Make sure to turn on friendly fire, if the tagger gets enough of his team mates killed by careless tosses/tags then he’ll become extremely unpopular and be either t/k’ed or left to fend for his/herself. IMHO I believe that some weapons are underpowered (Boomshot and Longshot). For a grenade/rocket launcher the BS really is BS. And with such awesome use of gibs you’d think the sniper would be able to take an appendage off a person if ARed correctly. But maybe things like that will be tossed around for use in the next two games.

    *How to kill a whiner*
    1. Turn on friendly fire
    2. Mute whiner
    3. Allow whiner’s teammates mutilate him/her
