Portrait of Ruin, undead ahead

bats.pngIs it out yet? How about now? OK… now?

I’ve got every Castlevania title available for the platforms I own. That means NES Classic Series: Castlevania, Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow on GBA, and Dawn of Sorrow on DS. I’ve played through all of these, as well as I, II, and III on NES, IV on Super NES, Bloodlines on Genesis, Symphony of the Night on PS1, and Lament of Innocence on PS2. It’d be fair to say I’m a fan of the franchise.

Portrait of Ruin is coming to my local Gamestop on Wednesday, December 6th. My preorder is in, which is great considering the preorder bonus offer of a CD, art book, stylus and more. The game’s early reviews are very strong, turning up between 9 and 9.5, and natch I’ll share my impressions with you fine folks as well once I’m playing it. Just be ready, I’m likely to gush, mmkay?

Anyone else this crazy for Castlevania?

EDIT: Oops, I forgot to mention that I’ve got the three GameBoy Castlevanias too, though so far they’re all too hard for me to beat. That’s Castlevania Adventure, Belmont’s Revenge, and Castlevania Legend.

In all honesty I remember hating the holy hell out of it. If memory serves it’s one of those games that just didn’t do 3D right. Also, I’m pretty sure the creators of Castlevania had no part in it.

To me Castlevania will always mean 2D

While the creators of Castlevania were part of the N64 games (which is not too remarkable, considering the first point where a reasonably consistent team worked on the series was in SotN, when Koji Igarashi took over), they’re generally considered inferior to the 2D games in the series. The first was called Castlevania 64, the second was called Legacy of Darkness. Legacy was a prequel to the other, and it resolved most of the issues 64 had, but by that time the platform was all but dead and nobody gave it a chance. I will say I didn’t find either game so bad, just not nearly as good as the 2D Castlevanias. Then again, I’m in a minority in loving Lament of Innocence.
