Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Impressions
I started gnawing the PSP’s first true MGS entry last night. I was a little put off initially, the free camera controls were completely new to me having never played the free-camera Subsistence version of MGS3. The fixed camera always worked for me and this took a little getting used to. After I understood the controls (which can be completely customized by button, if necessary), it all just clicked and I was back in the MGS groove. This is the definitely the MGS that we know and love.
br>I played about two full hours into the single player and it’s definitely a great MGS experience. If anyone was wondering if you could put any more depth into a Metal Gear Solid game, this is it. The title has been customized to fit with the portable format in mind, while still staying true to the MGS franchise. The dynamic of interrogating enemies to make them join your team is very unique and the huge amount of soldiers you can enlist in your army is stunning. So while it looks and plays like the usual MGS experience, there’s a complex game system that’s occurring in the background.
The online play is just as deep as the offline and I think it’ll definitely appeal to the hardcore players. Your offline progress, including the teammates you collected, improves your ability to progress online. This is something that Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror started but that MGS: POPS has now evolved. The game just oozes replay value, I can tell already that I’ll be playing this for a long, long time.
If you have questions about the title, don’t hesitate to comment below. I also recommend checking out the reviews below as well.
