Halo 3 ad: Meh

Halo 3 MehWhen Microsoft released the TV ad for Gears of War, the marketing push (at least just for the commercial itself) felt like a kind of, “We think this ad is kinda good and we hope you like it.” It didn’t feel like it was supposed to be this grand thing, and it kind of took on a life of its own. It was really good.

But I get a little irked when Bungie says stuff like this:

We just saw one of Digital Domain

  • Richard

It actually gives a good bit of info about the upcoming game.

I do agree it was a bit over hyped but in all reality it’s our own faults because we are the ones who did 99% of the hyping.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, a nice teaser for what will be a year long hype campaign.

Well, I dunno. Putting the commercial on during Monday Night Football and telling everyone to make sure you see it IT’S EXCLUSIVE OMG YOU HAVE TO GO WATCH IT RIGHT AWAY… yeah, that’s all MS hype machine.

And as far as game info… ANOTHER grenade type… Brutes. On Earth. Yeah, this is pretty much all stuff we already knew, unless a major portion of the gameplay is going to be spent reminiscing in a field of hay. That would be new.

I think you must also remember that only a small population of halo fans have read the books and so some of this stuff is fairly new to them (in a sense). Plus there is a lot more to the ad then you can see, Bungie loves hiding clues about their games in ads like this.

I loved the ad. I don’t recall Bungie ever saying the ad was exclusive to MNF, only that it would be aired there first the appear online and on XBL shortly after. Somebody is realllly over exaggerating.

The ad was interesting to me on two fronts – one, it was an attention grabbing piece tailored to the mass of humanity that would be watching MNF, MC was all super-hero-y and ready to kick some ass. Two, it had a lot of nice little pieces for the Halo hardcore. Who were the kids? Most think it was a young Master Chief and one of his two best childhood friends who were also in the Spartan program. We saw a Mongoose, not new info but new to Halo 3. That shield thing, what was that? It’s not necessarily a grenade according to Bungie. MC sprinting, is that targeted for Halo 3? Was that the Halo 1 or 2 pistol MC was carrying? Looked like a new type of Brute, smaller, carrying the already announced new Brute weapon, the Spiker. Another mohawked Brute dude, with another gravity hammer or whatever that thing was. That’s new.

So for the hardcore fan, this was a great ad. For a casual gamer with normal interest in Halo, a nice reminder that Halo 3 is coming. For those that get pissed off at Bungie do a weekly blog for their fans, apparently this ad was more fuel for their odd rage.

Wow, what happened to my paragraph breaks in the previous comment?

I was a little dissappointed since I was initially expecting to see something running in engine. I could really give a shit about conceptiual art in this case, I’m dying to see what Bungie can do with this new piece of hardware.

Forget Killzone… I’ll believe it when I see it. Now I still have to wait to really see Halo 3.

I feel more excited and a bit dissapointed, but I know the payoff in the end will be worth the wait. ( Anyone else sign up for the BETA? )

Well, yeah, OF COURSE I signed up for the beta…

Well it was hyped up a lot…, but that’s about as far as my agreement with you on the ad goes. Something about the trailer felt really good, the overall mood was great. Starting off with a glimpse to the past and moving on to some awesome MC moves, it all just felt really right. I really enjoyed the GoW trailer, mainly due to the good overlaying music, but the new halo 3 trailer just feels more action-packed. The trailer might not give any inside looks into the new game( or it might give them all), but it is still a great trailer. only complaint, Bungie has too many cliffhanger endings
