Guild Wars Celebrates 3 Million Copies Sold

The little game that could has hit 3 million copies sold, and not a penny in subscription fees has been paid. I found Guild Wars to be lacking in the all-important addictive loot factor way back when I tried it out, and ended up selling my copy of the game to a far-less-picky gamer. Not long after that I spent some time in World of Warcraft before kicking that habit, seemingly for good.

Me leaving and meeelions of others subscribing to World of Warcraft didn’t stop the folks at NCSoft from cranking out a couple of expansions, so raise a glass to the folks who are proving that you can have an all-online game survive on retail revenues alone. The picture here is from Guild Wars: Nightfall, the latest expansion; the caption is mine; and the story was seen at IGN.

Just a small correction: Nightfall is not an expansion, it is a stand alone game. You do not have to purchase the other Guild Wars games to play Nightfall, therefore it is not an expansion.

Owning all of the Guild Wars games improves your experience — giving access to all the Skills, access to all the unique items dropped by bosses in each game, a clearer view of the where each contient fits into the GW universe, etc. — however there is no requirement to purchase all of them.

Thanks Brinstar I forgot that. They are all standalone games, but having them all gives you more features. That is another key differentiator between them and other games, and a really clever marketing method.

That way first-timers can buy it, jump in, and find out they can go and get the other two games to get more features.
