eBay PS3′s Losing Steam Fast

Submitted by on December 10, 2006 – 6:51 pm2 Comments

ebay_logo_sm.gifThe week that the PS3 came out eBay was run a muck with ridiculous prices being paid for it. I saw the same thing happen with the 360 but prices remained high for the 360 for nearly two months after launch. You would think then that when I sat down this evening and decided to check current PS3 auctions that I would find the same thing…wrong. To my amazement what I saw was the PS3 going for barley over retail. There were a few auctions that were near a grand but those had lots of extras. Besides that I saw several auctions that ended without one single bid. One auction had a starting bid of just $650 and ended without one taker.

Is this rapid downvaluing of the PS3 just due to its price or are people losing interest in Sony as a gaming platform. Once Sony delivers consoles in larger numbers I imagine we will find out just how the price and negative publicity has hurt Sony.

Ohh…and by the way I posted this for all you Sony fans who want a PS3, if you don’t mind paying a little extra then it looks like you can get yourself a PS3 right now.

! thing I noticed early on in the bidding was that anyone with a set price got ignored real fast, also I feel that besides people getting completly ripped off the fact that the price was reported being so high turned many people off (me included).
I think most people who want one are willing to wait till it comes out in retail, when more games are released and where they can buy a coverage plan with the expensive piece of equipment.
The whole ebay thing felt akin to ticket scalping.
no matter how bad you want the ticket you know its a risk and your gonna get raped on the price.

The worst part for me is that I’m 4 for 4 on getting a winning bidder on my PS3′s that doesn’t pay up. So, yeah, my profiteering scheme pretty much tanked because people are bidding on these, but not paying. And the worst I can do is give them negative feedback. Oh no, not that. Negative feedback is such a HUGE deterrent.

Sorry… venting a bit. But seriously, everyone that bought PS3′s purchased them to try and make a quick buck on eBay (like me). Unfortunately, no one is really interested in buying the PS3 just to play with it, with the exception of a few Linux geeks. The same ones that run web hosts off a GBA, etc. etc.

But yeah, I expect that once the PS3 gets a few more shipments going, they’ll be collecting dust. At least until a major price drop or killer app.
