Dragon Quest IX DS Exclusive

dragon_quest.jpgAh the joys of an obscene installed base, Sony knew it well. Forbes is reporting that Dragon Quest IX is going to be a Nintendo DS exclusive. Dragon Quest VIII was a big boon for Sony, selling oodles of copies (oodles is translated as: a number I don’t know.) in the US and Japan. I think this sends a clear signal to Sony, your grasp on the market due to a previous-gen installed base has loosened.

At the same time, I’m a little disappointed with the news. Wouldn’t we much rather have a Dragon Quest IX title on a home console instead of a handheld? Does anyone really want Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PSP and not the PS3? Not me, I want my favorite franchises displayed on the big screen with the most hardcore of visuals.

It makes sense for Square Enix, they can save a hell of a lot of money developing Dragon Quest IX on the DS and they’ll probably sell piles of copies. Still, I would think that fans of the series would want a bit more out of the franchise than to have it truncated onto a handheld format.

Considering that the DS has outsold every other platform in Japan for several months now, and that in November, the DS basically sold more than all other consoles combined, this makes a lot of sense. And let’s face it, the graphics in DQ8 were not that spectacular. I don’t see the DS having a problem running close to that level of performance.

And it’s not really fair to compare this to having MGS4 on the PSP. MGS4 on the DS… now that IS tempting…

But anyway, I prefer to have my favorite franchises on platforms that actually sell. The PS3 is probably not the best choice if you want your game to rake in piles and piles of cash in Japan. (Although, I’m sure it’s not the worst choice. That would be the Xbox.)

The DS is only a suitable platform if the content is original and only for that platform. The DS is the recipient of some absolutely atrocious ports. Things so bad you really wonder why publishers even waste their time considering it.

Seeing DQIX exclusive to the DS is really a validation of Nintendo’s dominance in the handheld marketplace.

Wow! That’s a kick in the teeth, isn’t it.

I’m excited for DQ9. The DS will be perfect for DQ. I was very surprised through. I mean, I expected this to be on a console as well (no, not the Wii. . . Although). I just loves me some dragon quest!
