Don’t forget the Game Boy Advance!

Sure, the DS is getting all the fame and glory. But great games are still coming out for the GBA – just last week was Final Fantasy IV Advance, and last month was FFV Advance. Yes, you can play them on your DS, but consider this: Firstly, there are more buttons on the DS than the GBA, which makes it clumsier to play some games. I had trouble getting used to this. If you have a DS Lite, your cartridge sticks out a bit, which makes the system slightly harder to stick in your pocket/bag. And then there’s that whole unused screen issue. All these contribute to why I’m hanging onto my GBA SP – and even though the DS Lite fits into my purse great, the SP fits in even better – great if I decide to carry a small bag.

Besides, the fact that the DS has taken off so well means that GBA games are getting cheaper in the used sections of the stores, and on eBay – so there are great bargains to be had. And the DS can’t play GB Color games, so if you want a retro library, it’s another great reason to hang onto your GBA.

Here’s a little article at GameSetWatch that I wholeheartedly agree with, on why the Game Boy should never be counted out.

I still use my original GB Advance. It’s great for playing GameBoy Color games on. Other then that, it’s handy for when my g/f borrows my DS.

FFIV Advance came out last year. I bought it several months after it came out.

Whoops, it did. I was looking at a page that just said Dec. 12th, but didn’t mention the year.

The GBA’s *massively* inferior LCD screen pretty much settles the decision between throwing the DS Lite or the GBA into my pocket. It’s a nice little machine, but good lord that screen is hard to use after being used to the piercingly bright DS Lite display.

I can see the GBA SP’s screen just fine, and now they have the newer, brighter backlit screen. I had both a GBC and an original GBA at one point, but sold them because neither had a backlight – I know there are external lights available, but I already paid for the system; why should I have to pay for a light too?
