Don’t applaud, just throw Wii Points.

wiipoints.gifWith Wii Points doling out in units of 2000 per $20 card, and the games on the Wii Shop Channel going for varying amounts of 500, 600, 800 and 1000 points, picking out just what you want to download can be a matter of striking a delicate balance of pay vs play. I spent the 2000 points I got for Capitalmas on two 800 point games, and now I have a patient 400 point balance sitting in my account and nothing available below 500 points.

I have an easier time of rationalizing 800 points for a 16-bit game than 500 for an 8-bit game. 600 for an 8-and-a-half-bit game is pretty good too.

Clearly the standout games available now are Gunstar Heroes at 800 points and Super Castlevania IV, also at 800 points. There’s nothing worth getting at the 1000 point level yet if you got a DS at launch, since everyone played Mario 64 with their DS (well, I was late to that title, getting Asphalt Urban GT at launch instead, yeah I know, bad choice).

But what if you chose an 800 pointer and two 600 pointers? How’s that for value? Here’s how that would go. You’d get a 16-bit and two 8.5-bitters, so here’s what I would do.

Gunstar Heroes + Bonk’s Adventure + Bomberman ’93.
Super Castlevania IV + R-Type + Military Madness.

What’s your ideal combo to make those 2000 points?

The better thing to do with your lonely 400 points would be to get on your Wii and buy 1000 more points for $10 on the VC itself (everyone seems to forget you can get the points in increments of 1000).

Then grab a 800 point game and a 600 point game.

Then don’t buy anymore points until you have the right combo so you don’t waste any.

    TJ&E (800) + Bomberman ’93 (600) + Solomon’s Key (500) = 1900.

TJ&E takes serious inspiration from roguelikes, is meaningfully different every time it is played, and is arguably improved with the ability to exit the game to the Wii menu at any time and know that the game will be saved and wait until next time, meaning that one (or two) need not played the whole thing in a marathon session like before.

Bomberman ’93 is a Bomberman installment from the days when they were still all aces, and its multiplayer continues to hold up. Plus, I may be the only person left in the world who likes its single player.

Solomon’s Key is a *grossly* underrated puzzle game, arguably still Tecmo’s finest moment (yes I put it ahead of Tecmo Bowl, Dead or Alive, and any Ninja Gaiden old or new), with highly logical play, tons of secrets and a high challenge level. (One MUST play it with a FAQ handy to get the best ending though, the means of getting it is incredibly obscure.)
