Xbox 360 Movie and TV Impressions…Eventually

Snail.jpgThe Xbox 360 Movie and TV download service fired up on November 22nd. Well, “fired up” might not be the proper way to describe it. It really was more like a lit match, quivering at even the slightest breeze.

The download speed for Xbox Live has never been anything to write home about and the new Movie and TV download service only accentuates the problem. I purchased and initiated the download of a 1.5GB movie from Microsoft at about 8pm on Wednesday night. The download started and I stepped away for thirty minutes, came back and it was only 3% done. I realized at this point that there was no way in hell I was watching that movie tonight.

So I let it run and planned to write about it here when the movie finally finished downloading. Unfortunately, at midnight, a full four hours later, I had only 13% downloaded. That’s horribly slow, even for Xbox Live. Major Nelson commented yesterday on his blog about the issue:

    I dles 2 trailers and it took long enough to warrant a walk to the store.

    I was thinking I would order something for the kids before that then I realized that and amount of GBs would be too long to wait and i just took a quick trip to blockbuster.

    Imaginge trying to dl V for Vendetta in 720p (6.6gbs)
    I dont see how that would ever happen in hours unles its:
    Distributed networking like torrents

    I buy fiber line…
