When sadistic game designers attack

megaman.jpgWhat gameplay mechanics make a game horrible to play? That’s what this article on Game Breakers from 1up discusses. I like their first entry – obli-gaming. It took me 9 months to get so tired of Animal Crossing Wild World that I completely abandoned it. It got so irritating to have to play for say, half an hour every day, and then barely have anything to do after that.

Another is the stealth option – forcing a well-armed player to sneak around undetected to successfully complete a mission. Stealth is great when it truly is an option – when the player can decide whether to sneak past a guard or fight him.

Pits and spikes… spikes and pits. One false move off the edge of the floor and you’re toast. What’s even more laughable is when the spikes are nearly as large as the characters themselves – it looks as though the characters could jump down in between the spikes and walk past!

Check out the article at the link above for more, such as limited continues, the bane of all gamers’ existence.
