Review — Why Gears of War Deserves A Perfect Score

Submitted by on November 11, 2006 – 8:40 am11 Comments

gearsboxstuff.jpgEA managers can moan and complain all they want about Gears of War’s good review scores and apparent lack of innovation, but they’re just ticked off because THEY can’t seem to make a game as good as Gears.

And a lot of other people may be looking at this game wondering, “Why the high scores? It’s doesn’t look that innovative.” But let’s make one thing clear right now. Gears of War IS that good. Allow me to explain why.

Strictly speaking, Gears of War is NOT innovative. But then, neither was the original Star Wars when it was released in 1977. Almost every single aspect of Star Wars was borrowed and lifted from other sources, from 30′s sci-fi serials to Kurosawa’s classics to ancient mythology. But so what? Lucas found a way to blend all of these elements on the screen, and at the same time made them LOOK and FEEL amazing. There are a lot of opinions about the overall value of other offerings in the saga, but no one can dispute the power and impact of the original on pop culture.

Gears of War is what we, as video game enthusiasts, have been waiting for. A game that takes the best elements from the past 20 years of games, movies, and television and brings it together in an undeniably powerful way.

Yeah, yeah, we’ve all done the fighting off alien invaders thing, but no other game has channeled the classics so perfectly. While playing, I repeatedly found myself thinking, “Oh man, this was my favorite part of Pitch Black/Aliens/Road Warrior/Black Hawk Down, and it actually feels so RIGHT.”

And it’s that feeling of “rightness”, the proverbial “IT”, that sets Gears of War so far above everything else.

But enough of my rambling, how is the gameplay? Let me put it this way. I KNEW chainsaw kills were going to be satisfying, but I had no idea they would feel THIS GOOD. And the 20th feels every bit as satisfying as the first. And if chainsaws aren’t your thing, there are myriad other ways of dealing close-range punishment. Shotgun fans will be well pleased, as will anyone who loves getting the “You stuck LaMeR182″ messages in Halo 2. Grenade tagging can have hilarious possibilities. “Ha! I chainsawed j00! Wait, what is this thing stuck to my back! OH NOES!”

And I hate to compare Gears of War to other games like Halo 2, but there’s no question that where Halo 2′s sword rules, Gears of War’s chainsaw completely and utterly dominates. Oh, and in multiplayer… EVERYONE gets a chainsaw, so things are fairly well balanced right from the start.

And chainsaw kills always look great. The screenshots and videos that you’ve seen don’t do the game justice. You need to see this on a Hi-def screen to really understand just HOW good it looks. Gears has set the bar for graphical quality in the “Next Generation”. Like Halo and Half-Life 2, I found myself stopping to gaze in wonder at some of the scenery. From rain drenched industrial centers to post-apocalyptic sunsets, the art direction in this game is beyond phenomenal. So far, there simply is no better looking game on the market. Period.

Another great thing about the gameplay is the perspective. This is the first 3rd person shooter that doesn’t send me into fits of rage because of camera control, etc. Gears of War plays like a FPS, and a lot of people on fora throughout the intertubes are even referring to it as a FPS. It’s not though, and after your first chainsaw kill, you’ll understand why. SEEING the chainsaw rippage and curb stomping is what it’s all about. That’s the payoff!

My one beef with the game is the matchmaking. We’re STILL doing this the old way? I can already see players gravitating to one map or another, and I predict that in a few years, you’ll be hard-pressed to get a full game going with one of the “less popular” maps. This is what Halo 2′s matchmaking has taught us. Sometimes, lack of control is a fair sacrifice for nigh endless variety.

Oh, and the single-player is SHORT. I wish it was longer… but it does lend itself to re-playability, whether due to the online co-op (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU) or due to allowing multiple paths at several points. I’ve finished the single-player story, and I can’t wait to jump back in for some co-op and get some revenge on portions of the game that bent me over its knee when I was playing through alone.

Gears of War is the non-innovative, 3rd-person FPS w/ chainsaws that completely deserves every perfect score it gets. It is the ultimate video game. It is “The Lord of the Rings” of video games.

The Good: Everything. Especially chainsaws.
The Bad: The single-player is short. It’s so fun, you’ll be wishing there was more.
The Ugly: Matchmaking and stats: Why does no one follow Halo 2′s lead? (Oh… that’s why.)
5 OUT OF 5!

You make some fine points, and I completely agree. I’m in the process of reviewing the game, and while I discuss the game with others I haven’t found myself complaining about the readily apparent issues — something Gears certainly has. But it’s just that game is so damn FUN, and such a wonderful experience that I won’t hesitate to give it a high score.

  • Kia

That’s certainly a nice write-up, but…eh. Sorry, doesn’t do anything for me. A shooter is a shooter is a shooter. And when the multiplayer is nothing but -bad-, from what I’ve heard, that means the only part I even like about the genre in the first place isn’t worth playing.

I don’t necessarily need innovation all the time, but seeing shooter after shooter being a “killer app” is depressing. ~_~ Where’s the RPGs getting called “worth getting the console for?”

  • Kat

Kat, all you’ve done is heard about it, you’ve never even played it yourself. I’m sorry that you’re mad nintendo doesn’t have anything like it.

  • qbix

@Kia, you had a reason to buy the console with Oblivion. If you don’t like shooters, fine, just don’t bash a game you don’t understand. The fact is that this game gets so many things right it would be unfair not to rate it accordingly. There really are some jaw-dropping moments in terms of art direction. It’s sometimes hard to believe you are looking at the game engine and not a pre-rendered cinematic.Graphics aside, the gameplay is phenomenal. You get the sense that they went the extra mile to make it feel natural and provide as much control as you get with an FPS while preserving the benefits from the 3rd person perspective. GRAW tried to do this but the controls were sluggish and camera angles were sometimes awkward.I could go on about all the thing I love about this game but I can’t waste time writing and should be getting back to finishing the game in Hardcore :) I’ll just add one thing. Co-op over live. I mean, this is how Co-op is done. It’s part of the main story line, the second player can join a game in progress and lag is not an issue. Last time I had that much fun with co-op was back in the days of Contra for Nintendo.Gears of War is a game that nails just about everything it attempted and it deserves the scores it’s getting. Sure, a bit short with tons of replay value which more than makes up for the briefness. People who aren’t into this genre and fanboys of other consoles will criticize it, bash it, and down play no matter what but the fact remains the same: Gears of War is one of the best games ever made.

i’m an old bitterman gamer and i saw starwars episode 4 (before there were any episodes) in the theater on the friday it came out with my pops. and it wasn’t earth shattering because of the story, which wasn’t new at all. it was earth shattering because of the special effects.

i rememeber as we left the theater my dad said “that’s the coolest western i’ve ever seen.” and it was. don’t get me wrong, the story was nice, but like you said it was nothing new. the difference between it and all movies that came before were the special effects.

so your premise that star wars was popular not because of innovation but because it brought together all those old stories in a new way couldn’t be more wrong. that technique of moving the camera instead of the space ship models for special effects changed the way movies were made forever. it would have never been as popular if lucas hadn’t been such an innovator with special effects.

    innovation was the key.

i think the real story behind the ridiculous scores for gears has more to do with fan boys than honest reviewing. if you read the reviews they all seem to come from people that have some weird vested interest in one console being more successful than another and not in the real quality of the game. its almost as if people who bought an xbox360 feel that the only way they’ll be justified in their purchase is if all other consoles fail and all the games for their chosen console are perfect and infalible.

so from someone with no such interest (here’s a list of the consoles i have or will have in a week or so – magnavox odyssey, pong, nes, turbographics, sega, snes, saturn, dreamcast, psone, ps2, xbox, xbox360, ps3, and wii) gears of war is a fun game. if you like shooters this one is definitely a buy. its not going to change your life. the single player is kinda short and the story’s kinda weak. the colision detection can be a liitle hinky. i wonder if the decision to make the “a” button the dedicated button for stunts dumbs the game down a little. the ai isn’t anything special but it looks great and is big fun to play. the most emotional moment, however, is the commercial.

this game doesn’t deserve anything. its a game. its either good, bad, or somewhere in between based on its merits. how is this a better game than say burnout revenge? more innovative? nope. better realized? nope. more replayability? nope. chainsaws? yes. that must be it then.

so, for you fanboys out there, gears of war (on the basis that it has chainsaws) is the greatest game ever. for the rest of us, the ones that don’t have some agenda other than loveing the gaming goodness, gears is a strong 8 or 9 and is definitely worth a look.

  • tsk, tsk

You are crazy and Aeropause just lost a lot of points with me. I don’t think you understand the gravity of a perfect score.

  • SP420

You mentioned two gripes you have with the game, yet you give it a perfect score..?

  • WhoWantsDis

All I can say about this game is WOW ! ! I was really hoping it was going to be like Brute Force (yes I enjoyed Brute Force to the fullest) and to my surprise it surpassed it in every aspect. Like some of you said before, there are going to be gamers who bash on it simply because they are not into shooters. I myself enjoy any kind of game genre (except maybe RPG’s, those put me to sleep). This game is totally insane, they really did a great job on it…..Graphics, story, multiplayer, campaign, I mean it’s a perfect 10 for a shooter. It has all the elements it needs to be a great that it is! ! !

Now let me go off topic for a bid hear…COD3 (Call of Duty 3) is also an awesome game as well, and I really think it deserves a high mark…not a 10 but very damn close to it !! All in all Gears of Wars has live up to everything I thought it was going to be. I can’t wait to go home and play ! !

This game is only out for xbox 360 unlike orther great titles such as call of duty 2, graw, and oblivian. Thats why its the killer app, you cant unless its consel exclusive.

    youareivan,

I hear your point, but I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying about innovation. If you want to talk about “special effects”, then yes, Gears of War IS innovative. There is no other game that even approaches Gears’ visual qaulity. The lighting is perfect, the terrain is perfect, the textures are perfect…

I also find your “fanboy” moniker somewhat frustrating. I have no vested interest in Microsoft or the Xbox 360. I didn’t get any free stuff, I don’t work for Microsoft (never have), so not sure why you would think I have a vested interest here.

And SP420′s question is a fair one. Why is this game getting a perfect score when I noted that the single-player is short and the matchmaking is not what I would’ve picked? Well, firstly, the shortness of the single-player is kind of like knocking the perfect steak for being only 6 ounces. Gears of War is the perfect steak. And really, the matchmaking is a function of Xbox Live, and shouldn’t reflect the quality of the multiplayer game. Especially considering that they are only following Microsoft’s stipulations.

Great very detailed review but i too believe that no game is perfect, i mean give it a 98! Only people so obseesed to give it 100% miss its flaws
