Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

PS3 Upscale Fix Might Never Arrive

Submitted by on November 27, 2006 – 10:33 am3 Comments

ps3-black.jpgI have to keep going back to my hands-on report from the PS3 Source Event in NYC to remember why I once wanted a PS3. While I think it has potential down the road, that road is looking more like US 20 with each passing day (see: Longest F’ing Road in the US of A). The most recent quotes from Sony camp seem to state that they’re investigating the much-maligned upscaling problem and that it might NOT be fixed in a firmware update.

“they currently cannot confirm that this 1080i issue will be resolved via a firmware patch. The official line is now that they are “looking into the issue and haven’t stated any actions that will be taken regarding it.”

I have pretty much stood up for Sony’s PS3 all alone here at Aeropause, I’ve really tried to be as impartial as possible. There are great things about the system and it’s overall potential but it’s oversights like this upscaling issue that really piss me off. I recently purchased a brand new HDTV and this wouldn’t effect me at all, but if I had purchased this TV a year ago and it didn’t offer 720p, I’d be furious.

So do I hate on Sony because of this oversight or just say, “Sucks to have an old HDTV set!” I have to hate on the PS3 for this because if I don’t give them hell, another company might do the same thing to me a year from now. I apologize if this is old news because if it is, it simply isn’t getting enough press.

I don’t hate on the PS3 but this news is certainly a bummer. While I’m not the typical early adopter, I do consider myself fairly tech savvy when it comes to my purchases.

I bought my HDTV about a year ago and I made sure it supported HDMI and had plenty of inputs to make itself useful. However, I just recently bought an upscaling DVD player with HDMI hoping to get the most out of my TV. The player lets you choose if you want 480P, 720P or 1080i. When I hit the 720P my TV went wonky. I looked at the manual and realize that it ONLY supports 1080i. I only bought this TV a YEAR AGO. I was under the impression that this PS3 problem only effected 3+ year old TVs. I was wrong. After more research, I have found that not only do older TVs have issues with 720P but many newer entry level ($500-$750) HDTVs do as well.

Anyway, if you are interested in the PS3, learn from my mistake and do some research and make sure any TV you buy supports 720P.

You know, I’ll bet a lot of people who bought PS3′s are just realizing that their TV doesn’t even support 720p. It wasn’t something that we talked about when HDTV’s were first becoming popular.

Yup. I found out my Samsung HDTV doesn’t do 720p when I got my HDTV cable box a couple of months ago. I looked into it, and most Samsung HDTVs don’t do 720p. When I looked, they only had two models that did. Go figure.
