PS3 Load Times & Quiting

Submitted by Richard Windsor on November 6, 2006 – 10:25 amComments

Our friends over at Kotaku made this quick video showing how long it takes the PS3 to do different tasks. They point out that NBA 07 is another game that requires a good size chuck of the game to be installed on your hard drive in order to avoid long load times. Looks like Sony was lying when they said load times would not be an issue…I am so shocked! The other thing that, if true, seems stupid is that fact that you can only quit out of games by using the controllers quit game function. There is no quit menu within the game itself. This might just be the way it is for this particular game, but if it is the way it works for all games someone at Sony was asleep at the wheel. I still don’t think the PS3 is worth anywhere near $600 yet, and with this whole loading issue I doubt it ever will be.

This is a surprise? Ever notice that every single sony made console and even the PSP has long load times? Longer than any other system that has hit the mainstream market. It's pathetic. I have not found anything wrong with Dead Rising's load times. Sure it takes a bit but no longer than 20 seconds at the most. Most screens take around 10 seconds to load. Check the Gamecube. Load times are almost non-existent. It takes a full minute to load each game on PS3 and might even take longer between each screen especially if you are running HD. Sony said no load times but the loads are as bad as PSP and worse than PS2.

Sean, someone might start to think he's biased? I already do! I'm a 360 gamer and I can say that the load time here in this clip is nothing more than any of the games I've played (especially a sports game where there is many licensing screens). And faulting the game for not having a quit option is rediculous, you could at least say that Sony is copying Microsoft instead of bashing them for doing the *exact same thing*. Furthermore Kotaku didn't post that video to show "how long it takes the PS3 to do different tasks," they posted it to show how the controller gets set up and the game starts up. I'm sick of douschy 360 fan boys spinning things like their system of choice is some sort of political stance... I'm just glad this is the only horrible post I've read on Aeropause because I like this site and I'd hate for it to be this biased.

Oh what a shocker richard bitching over useless features and ripping on the PS3. I am so shocked. The real question is why does the game need a quit menu options. Hell when im in a game it will take a longer for me to go back to the main menu from the game than to just hit the menu button. I do this on my 360. And those loading times are nothing special, but the 360 is a load fest to. Dead Rising loading every 20 seconds. I liked that that was a great feature loading a lot. Same with most of the games I play. PGR 3 a considerable load time going in and coming out of races. It was horrid, though expected. Fight Night Round 3 has more respectable loading times, but for the kind of stuff displayed you'd think they'd have some sort of precaching going on.

Someone might start to think you're biased. I love my 360 and I'll love my PS3 and my Wii. I obviously have issues since I declare no allegiance to anyone. This is the launch of a console everyone knows it takes at least 6 months to a year to get the console "launched". Look at the 360 they have some pretty generic games out there. I've not much desire to play a lot of them. I have played quite a few of them (thanks to my friends gamefly account). Nintedo's Wii could be an exception to this (doubtful though), every console has a shitty start.

    Am I missing something?

Why would it matter if you had an in-game menu option to quit, if there's one conveniently located through your controller?
  • Kyle
The point is that Sony lied. The loading times are long.

Wait the complaint here is that
    1. It takes less then a minute to load content to the hdd so there are less in game load screens?
    this is bad why?
ever play Dead Rising on the 360?
    and
    2. No quit game?
I own a 360 besides demos and Arcade games you quit your game by holding in the center X button and get one of 2 menus that show pretty much exactly what happens when you hold the button on the SIXAXIS.
So what the point here again?

Quick note: Caching to the hard drive is optional, not mandatory.

Where the hell is the "Quit Game" option in my 360 games? As far as I know, that's only the Arcade.
  • Richard
No squall the 360 does not do this.
  • squall182
why is this so bad? doesn't the 360 share this same exact trait? the only time you see "quit game" is when you play demos.
