PS3 Doesn’t Upscale – Early Adopters Pissed!

Submitted by on November 16, 2006 – 10:35 am9 Comments

t_UPSCALE.jpgI decided to hold off buying a PS3 until its worth the money, which at this point may be quite a long time, but a friend of mine decided to purchase one and was quite looking forward to High Definition gaming. There is however a huge problem. My friend was an early adopter of HDTV sets and I mentioned to him that the PS3 games will not scale up to 1080i, which is the resolution of his 5 year old HDTV. He was very upset and said that he is thinking of selling it. I told him that he might as well keep it because it might be a problem that is fixable with a firmware update, but even then he was still pretty upset that he can

Dear lord why does Sony try and screw everyone? With this and the horrible launch games (except for Resistance)why the hell would someone buy this piece of crap!

“but even then he was still pretty upset that he can

    Biggos

Old HDTV’s that have a native resolution of 1080i don’t display at 720p, which means that you have to play in standard def. The PS3 does not support upscaling for these older TV’s

  • biggos

So they won’t even play in 480p? That is so lame and the only thing I can do is lol.

I had up until now been planning to only buy the PS3 in a year or two used. But at this point I doubt I will ever get one. Besides, with an initial price of $600 it may be more than two years before they reach a used price that I am willing to pay which would be around $150. By the time they are that cheap there will be an Xbox 720(?) and Wii 2.

Sony is setting the stage for massive amounts of hardcore gamers (including me) to skip their machine this generation.

Yeah, so Sony just can’t catch a break.

This sounds bad, but my guess is this is just a firmware update away from being a non-issue.

Sony better get in front of this asap before it confuses consumers enough to avoid the console.

There should be a setting in the console to choose your output.

Let me help a bit to clarify what is going on here…

Older High Definition TV’s that feature only 480p, 480i, or 1080i resolution capabilities will have to settle for 480p mode rather than upscaling the image to the TV’s 1080i.

Just as Microsoft can add 1080p upscaling support, I’m pretty confident Sony can easily upscale firmware to handle this. If early adopters expected the system to do something that it wasn’t specified to do, then that’s really egg on their face.

This is why you wait until the dust settles.

  • Richard

While I agree James, this should have been something that the PS3 comes with right out of the box, there is no excuse for this as nealry 30% of HDTV owners have these older tv’s and as much hype as Sony has put into being truly HD they have yet to make a good decision regarding it.

My guess at Sony’s thought process: “New HD televisions will upscale from 720p; People with older televisions will have to by one of our new ones. Mwhahahaha!” (Not an actual quote)

I just read yesterday that it would upscale!
