PS3 Allows Any 3rd Party Hard Drive

hard_drive.jpgSomething that I assumed for quite awhile (due to verbage below from playstation.com) has been confirmed as fact. According to IGN, the PS3 will actually allow any 2.5″ Serial ATA hard disc drive, not just the official drive. It’s great to see a company actually open things up and allow the fanbase seek out a nice and fat mobile hard drive to toss into the system. Right now I think notebook drives are topping out around 160gb.

This news, along with the use of Bluetooth mice, keyboards and headsets might take the sting out of the price for some. Combine this with news that larger capacity, 360-exclusive hard drives will be released by Microsoft in the not-so-distant future, Sony earns a few brownie points. A bare 2.5″, 120GB Western Digital drive goes for only about $130 tops. Microsoft’s prices won’t even compare.

An additional side note: The PS3 also allows any everyday HDMI cable and is also compatible with any PS2 video cable.

This is very cool, and from Sony, a bit surprising.
Microsoft is gouging for is HDs and that is pretty bothersome. $100 for a 20 gig drive? Thats robbery pure and simple. Forcing us to buy a proprietary harddrive? Yuck. I was really hoping the Wii would support external USB HDs but now its not looking so likely. If it does, that would be fantastic, especially now that its been confirmed you can use custom sound tracks in some games.
