“Official” PS3 Linux Kit Ready for Takeoff
The PS3 has already been the beneficiary of the Fedora Core 5 Linux OS, but the official Yellow Dog Linux OS release is apparently scheduled for Monday. The installation guide for the operating system is online, for any of you that are interested.
The installation looks pretty straightforward, definitely easier than the hack-job Fedora Core setups I’ve seen. From the looks of the manual, it seems it might only take 15 minutes to install (not counting initial setups and such). The guide give some interesting partitioning info:
“You will be presented with option to “Allot 10GB to the Other OS” or “Allot 10GB to the PS3 System.” If your PS3 has a 20GB drive and you select 10GB for the PS3 System, this leaves roughly 6.5GB for Linux (which is not enough for a full install, but ample for the default YDL install).”
6.5GB is a pretty huge chunk of that precious hard drive space. Although, with the ability to pretty inexpensively swap it with a 120GB drive, I guess that’s not a problem. I’m not too familiar with Yellow Dog Linux, but I’m pretty interested to see some benchmarks on what an OS written exclusively for the PS3 can do. The OS will retail for $99 and can be purchased via their website.
A free (as well as, support-free) version will be available by Christmas. Unfortunately, I’m sure this will be on torrents everywhere by lunchtime on Monday.
