Major Nelson Unhappy about EA’s lame Marketplace content

Submitted by on November 6, 2006 – 2:32 pm3 Comments

Xbox 360Buried deep in the comments of Major Nelson’s blog (who happens to be the Xbox Live Director of Programming, we find this very interesting remark from the Major himself:

I spend much of last week commenting on this…and I’ll talk more about how I feel on my show this week.

Also, I *JUST* got off a plane from the east coast, so it will take me a while to catch up on all the comments that were posted since I have been offline, so pardon me of I was not able to comment on this.

It’s still unclear to me: *IS* this content available on other platforms within the games? If so, then no..I am not happy about this. I need to do more digging on this, but I have sent off some rather terse emails to some folks to get to the bottom of this. I am also not happy about you guys not being happy.

So there you go. Although, I’ve got to wonder how EA could’ve slipped this paid unlockable crap past Major Nelson (real name: Larry Hyrb) in the first place. Was it just a case of Major Nelson being away from his desk for too long? Who knows, but it’s starting to sound like this could be the end of EA’s Live Marketplace shenanigans.

Major not aware of EA’s actions? Sure, whatever. I don’t buy it. He freaking works there, he has to know what’s going on, specially if it’s something that could jeopardize a the business model that rides in micro-transactions. I no longer buy EA’s games for many reasons, this being one of them, however, I think MS seriously needs to start enforcing VALUE instead of focusing on so-called “choice”.

He wants an example of crippled games, take FIFA 07 for instance. The 360 version will only feature 7 leagues, as opposed to 28 for all other consoles. Likewise, the 360 version only comes with 23 stadiums as opposed to 51 for the other consoles. Can you guess what EA is planning to do? Exactly. If they do what I think they will, they’ll effectively be selling a game at full price with a deliberate decision to charge for the content you would be getting on current gen versions of the same game. If so, I say suck my balls EA, and you too MS for allowing this to happen.

Last thought in mind is a reminder to people that ultimately, we decide if EA is profitable next quarter. We can’t just sit around waiting for MS to do something about it. We can send the message simply by not supporting companies that do this. Don’t buy their games. Don’t even download the demos.

    Just my two cents.

FIFA’s site. Click on stadiums and leagues:

Major has nothing to say in this matter, EA can do whatever they want, they got a special agreement with MS concerning pretty much everything Xbox Live.

The only thing Major (Larry) can do is “send an angry letter”.

Methinks we put Major Nelson on too high of a pedestal for what he really is, a PR marketing tool (which I don’t mean literally). Now the cracks appear as his popularity surges.
