The new RPG based on the end of the world, Left Behind, is designed to make people think about their eternal salvation, but even some Christian groups are protesting the game. The premise behind the book series, as well as the game, is that the rapture has occurred, and all non-believers in Jesus Christ have been left behind on Earth to suffer through 7 years of the tribulation – the part of the apocalypse where Satan is given rule over the earth. The whole premise of the rapture is hotly debated in Christian circles in the first place; the word “rapture” is never used in the Bible, and the idea behind it is based on a scant few Bible verses. Further dividing Christians is the fact that Left Behind is based on a pre-tribulation rapture; other Christians believe the rapture will come in the middle of the 7 years, called mid-tribulation; at the end of the 7 years, called post-tribulation; or perhaps not happen at all. The books and game pick up at the rapture, when some of those who were left behind realize how wrong they were, begin believing in Christ, and form the “Tribulation Force” to help each other through the end of the world – not an easy task, as they face severe persecution and even martyrdom.

It’s not surprising, then, that the game is causing just as much controversy as the book series. Some Christian groups are protesting the game, saying it promotes religious intolerance and violence. The president of the Christian Alliance for Progress, Rev. Tim Simpson, accuses the game of misinterpreting Biblical prophesy (just as the book series), and rejects accepted Biblical scholarship. Rev. Simpson also says the game promotes faith-based killing, which in today’s world of religious terrorism, is frightening. In a way, it does promote religious intolerance, because by definition, Christians believe that all other religions lead to hell and only Christ leads to heaven.

So what does Left Behind Games, the company, have to say? “The game is designed to be a classic battle between good and evil, but it does not gratuitously depict violence or death.” He added that it

Well, if it pisses off mainstream Christian lobbyists then it must be damn good!

Actually it’s been getting pretty dismal reviews. It’s apparently very unstable and buggy.
